First of all...work taking you out? Never heard of it. ;-)
I would not initiate ordering dessert in that situation. If the supervisor (or whomever is holding the purse-strings) is like, "Hey, let's get dessert!" then great. But I wouldn't go out to dinner on the company's dime and be like, "...and where's my dessert?" Nor would I order something greatly more expensive than the average menu item.
But, like I said, not that I would know. The last meal paid for by my work was the day I interviewed for the job eight years ago.
I'd never do this with coworkers, but I've done it with close friends once or twice.
A nice memory from our family vacation to Ireland a couple years ago was the seven of us ordering four desserts, and each taking a bite then quickly passing it around the table
All this worry for nothing! People started ordering dessert on their own, so I didn't even have to say anything or ask. I ordered super yummy pie. However, when the desserts came, one end of the table started sharing with others. I was at the other end of the table - I scarfed my pie down so fast so that I wouldn't have to share. Like I said, I am greedy. Several others ate their desserts by themselves, so I was not the only one. I still don't understand this incessant need to share. My work is pretty generous - they were ordering pitchers of beer, mixed drinks, and dozens upon dozens of jumbo crabs (it's a Maryland thing).
Wait? This was a crab lunch? All time constraints go out the window for that. I can't imagine having steamed crab for a work lunch unless it's an all afternoon team building type thing.
I'd also support dessert after crabs. Bc it's just too much work for so little reward to eat steamed crabs. You need dessert as your reward!
And this is from someone whose husband has been crabbing 5 times in the past 2 weeks. We've probably been through almost a bushel in 2 weeks (see last nights WFD)
