I just looked this up because I took them off for rf and since I just turned him, I started freaking out reading this thread, lol. They are not required for rf. Canada requires them for ff, and Diono strongly recommends their use for ff in the US.
We love our Radians (have 3 between the two cars, might get a 4th when the Marathon expires). They install fine in both of our cars and the low profile made it easy for DD to climb in and out by herself when I was massively pregnant with #2. We have so many Radians because we are TTC #3 and I prefer to drive smaller cars and see 3 across in my future. The only thing I'm not a fan of is the rethread harness.

I love our radians! I can fit 3 side by side. I wish there were more seats that would let you do that. So far there are like 2 on the market... We are down to only 1 radian though FF and ours installs fine.
This thread is making me love my Nextfit. I don't even know what a tether is. And to think I looked into buying a Radian because I see it on here so much but went with the Maxi Cosi (big fail for us!) instead.
Pretty sure you need to tether FF with a Nextfit too.
Check your manual. some don't need the tether if you're using latch but they do if you're just using the belt.
