I know this is dumb but I am irrationally irritated.
DD (3rd grade) is doing a program called battle of the books (it is voluntary). They read 10 chapter books from a list then in January have a competition where teams compete answering questions about the books.
I ordered all the books from Amazon and they cross all genres which is nice. They are also all award winning books. However not one of the ten has a female lead character as far as I can tell. Obviously DD enjoys reading books that have female lead characters as she relates to them more.

We do battle of the books too! I think it's odd they don't have a female lead, but they did include a large variety so I'd focus on that. Honestly, so many books have female leads I wouldn't worry about it especially considering she's an avid reader.

I would probably bring it up in a nice way. Say how great the books were, dd loved it yadda yadda but she really likes books with girls for the relatable factor and it would be even better if next years list included a few. It was probably an innocent oversight and would probably make them change.
Yeah I would say something. I find that annoying as well. I feel like I recently saw an article on huff post too about how there is such a disparity when it comes to male versus female protagonists in contemporary books. Ugh.

What are the books? I'm super curious.
We do battle of the books too.
I don't think you're being stupid. There is a big push right now (however misguided) to make sure that there are good "boy books" for kids to read. So they likely went at it from that angle. I'm not saying it's right, but that may have factored into it.
