Let me preface this in that I do not wear leggings. I WILL NOT wear leggings. On me, they look like crap and the one pair I tried on my body (when I was considerably lighter than I am now), showed that for me, they cannot happen. I don't even have the courage to try them on again today!
Anyway, I'm looking for something warm (we're going in Dec.), can be worn to be dressed up, do not look like pajamas/sweatpants/athletic pants that are going to be comfortable for an overnight flight. Jeans/cords just aren't going to cut it.
They're nice enough to wear to work with heels and a blouse but also very comfortable. For flights, I wear them with a tunic or tank and flowy cardigan/scarf and Toms or other flats. I've worn them on several 13+ hour flights and haven't had any complaints.
I used to wear a pair of loose elastic-waist black cotton knit pants and a solid-colored tee with a loose cardigan layered over it. (I always wear a short-sleeve/long-sleeve layer set on a plane, since the temp can go from too-cold to too-hot in the same flight.)
I've since upgraded that to a similar outfit but with moisture-wicking fabrics for the pants and tee. I always have a connection, and if there are delays, I might have to rush to make a connection. I hate being stuck on a long flight in sweaty clothes.

I either wear yoga pants and a kurta/tunic or an ankle length skirt and a sleeveless top. I cant sleep on long haul flights so I need something that will be comfy for 30+ hrs when I fly. I bring along a pashmina to use if I get cold or I just use my winter coat as a blanket (if I am traveling to a cold climate). I also travel 99% of the time in flip flops because my feet swell like mad when I fly so I always bring 2 pairs of socks for the flight.

I've worn yoga pants with t-shirt, cardigan and scarf or pants like these - I know there's a name for them but I don't know what it is... I've also been known to change in the airport bathroom after the flight from super comfy to street clothes

I always wear a jersey-knit maxi skirt with a tank and bring a top layer - either a cardi or a fleece, depending on the outside temp. I also always travel in sandals because my feet swell and because they're easier to slip off/on during the flight, so I bring a pair of compression socks and a pair of fluffy, fleece socks in my carry-on.

I fly long flights (13 hours or so) often and I've come to love traveling in a plain, black jersey maxi dress. It's comfy and and I can easily throw a t-shirt and sweater on top if I'm cold. I sometimes bring leggings to wear underneath if I think my legs might get cold.
It's also a great layering piece so I can use it once I get to wherever I'm going!
Before I wore dresses, I normally wore jeans on the flight, and then just change into pajamas/comfy clothes for the flight. Then I change back into regular clothes before landing - helps me feel somewhat refreshed after an overnight flight!
My first choice is leggings with a long top, a long light weight sweater, and a pashmina. Since leggings is a no go... My second choice is a maxi dress that can be layered with a sweater.
On my overnight flight last week I wore some awesome pants that were like a hybrid between yoga pants and "work" pants. I think they are Alala brand or something? Maybe look for some pants that blur the line between activewear and 'real' clothes?
Flying is a time when I do not care too much about how I look, particularly for a long haul flight. I just wear comfortable layers especially in winter that I would be ok sleeping in. I also make use of the in-flight blanket. I wear comfortable walking shoes but sometimes I take them off in-flight. (I don't have smelly feet and I tuck the shoes in the underseat compartment in front of me.)
I bring deodorant, a brush and basic make up (in a zip-loc bag) and I freshen up towards the end of the flight before landing.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. Mark Twain

I can't wear leggings either. I'm tall and fairly thin and was told when I was trying them on at White House Black Market where they insisted I try them that I have 'thick knees'.
Anyway, I normally wear yoga style pants with a longer shirt over them. I try to layer and also make sure it's something I could wear the following day in case they lose my luggage and I pack a change of undergarments. I learned this lesson the hard way when my luggage was lost on a trip to Greece for 2 days.

I like these, but unfortunately they only go up to a 14. I'm a pretty standard 16 - which means that women's sizes do not fit me right.

I have the opposite problem, My calves are HUGE and my legs look like 2 trunks of trees. I have seen women who have legs like mine wearing leggings, and I cringe as to how bad they look. I realize that it's an overnight flight and no one looks good getting off of one of these flights, but I just can't do it.
LOL about losing your luggage in Greece, we lost our's on the way to a resort in Turkey. I spent 3 days in the khakis, t shirt and hiking shoes I normally wore on the plane. And as it was a resort town, the largest size I could find was an 8. I found ONE swimsuit in the entire town that fit me, and it was so butt ugly but my choices were spend the day out on the Mediterranean in my khakis or this swimsuit. I figured no one would ever see me again, so I could get away with it. Little did I know that SO would take a picture of me in 'kelpie' as he affectionately called the swimsuit (and yeah, it did look like a bed of kelp) and use it to blackmail me!

The brand offers plus size, but I'd make sure to read the size guide. Some run larger and others smaller.
Plus sizes don't fit right. I don't know what manufacturers do when they add a W after the size, but on me it goes all wonky. Believe me, I've tried! I may try again with these, but don't hold out much hope.
LLBean also carries something like this (which does go up to a standard 16) that I'll also be trying too.

I was curious about the "W" too. Bummer, though. I hope you find something that works!
Measurement wise, I was between a 10 and a 12 so I ordered both (it was anniversary sale pricing) and the 10P fit better. Doesn't look like nordies has the petite anymore though.'
I paired with a shelf-bra camisole as I didn't want an underwire and wanted options to strip in case I had a hot flash (I have weird hormones) and then wore a cardigan over it and a long scarf.
I don't like to wear lounge wear/athletic wear out of the house unless I'm going to the gym/working out, and I don't make an exception for long flights...
So I usually wear a comfy maxi skirt or a comfy dress. Then a top with light sweater and large pashmina or scarf to keep warm.
I always wear comfy ballet flats since they're easy to slip off on the plane and put socks on if needed.
If it's winter time then I will throw on warm tights underneath.
Lastly, another tip I learned is to wear a panty liner to feel fresh when you land. Definitely makes a difference for me.
In typical GBCN fashion, I'm just going to offer you something you specifically said no to lol. In theory, joggers are athletic looking, but would you consider dressy joggers? Something like these?
I actually prefer them to leggings, which I think can be too restrictive. Joggers are looser fitting and softer. When I pair them with a blazer, I think they dress up rather nicely (especially when I stick with black, gray, etc.):
In the winter, I'd add a loose sweater, a scarf, and furry socks which I'd keep concealed with a pair of wedge boots. Once settled in, you can ditch the boots and sub a blanket for the blazer.
Alternatively, I'd go with wide leg pants in a fabric that doesn't wrinkle, and a draped sweater. So maybe pants like these with a cowl neck sweater:
Or a more fitted sweater with one of those vests that are everywhere in the world. I couldn't do a dress or skirt on a long flight--my legs would freeze.
On another note, with a long top, I think everyone looks nice in leggings, so you are probably being rough on yourself. I'll hope you'll eventually try them again!

As long as the top comes down to my ankles! I'm not being rough on myself, believe me. I'm cognizant enough to realize that something that form fitting does not look good on my body. It didn't look good on my body 40 lbs ago, and I can't imagine any improvement.
i also have curly hair & just returned from India. Our return was about 40 hours - one long layover. I ended up in a ponytail for the last leg of the flight.
I wore comfortable pants, tank top, light weight long sleeve and wore compression socks for the 14 hour flight. Once off that flight I washed my face, brushed my teeth and changed bra/underwear. That made me feel more human
