People that get daily homework for the younger grades, how are you even getting it done?
We start as soon as DS gets home. When DS is motivated, it only takes a half hour; but some days it takes us all the way to dinner time. We do reading as part of bedtime.
DD's school day is from 8:15am - 3:15pm. We get home around 3:45pm. Start homework around 4ish. Have dinner around 5ish (she eats so slowly) & bedtime starts around 6:15pm with lights out by 7pm. It is really hard because I have to sit with DD to do her homework because most of it needs to be explained and/or to keep her on track. It is really hard to try & make dinner while trying to get her homework done. We have had a lot of easy dinners since homework has started. I have no idea how I would swing this if I had other children or if she had any after school activities. She does have Girl Scouts one Monday a month & there was zero homework done that day because it was 4:45 by the time we got home so we had to squeeze it in the other 3 days after school. As the week goes on & she gets more and more tired & getting her to focus on the work is so difficult. Tonight's homework took about an hour, without the math website because she just kept pouting & stopping.

Most people I know do homework right away. However, DD definitely needs to decompress. We sometimes go to the park on the way home, or she'll play at home, or even watch a couple shows. I'm fine with it. HW is required….school wide rule. If you miss once, you get a warning. 3 warnings earns you a trip to the principal. There are days it's definitely challenging. She just got home from soccer and is eating…and then will go work on spelling with DH for her test tomorrow.

Our district doesn't do required homework until 4th grade, and I was surprised by that rule at first but now that ds is in 1st I truly love it. They have a spelling test every Friday with 6 published words, 4-6 application words, a sentence, and then a comprehension test for enrichment words (that they have to know the meaning of but not spell). So they are encouraged to practice for those, and the teacher encourages us to work with them on math and reading. Oh, and every once in a while there will be a book check where they bring home a little book and they are supposed to read it to us and we sign off on it. I seriously cannot imagine what life would be like if I had to force ds to do homework every day. He complains enough about reviewing the spelling words.
While I wish our school gave no homework, after reading this thread, I'm not complaining.
DD (2nd Grade) has school from 8:00-2:30. We're home by 3:00. She grabs a snack and starts her homework. Mon & Wed she has a Math worksheet. Tues & Thurs she chooses from a list of prompts and writes based on what she's reading. She reads 20 minutes. She's done by 3:30-3:45. She has no homework on Fridays.
OMG! We did all this homework this week & the teacher didn't even bother to take her homework out of her K.I.T (keeping it together) binder. So I feel like we did all of this for NOTHING!!!!!
Plus she's been given additional weekend work where she has to interview and older person & get them to tell her a story about something they experienced that was significant in history! My mom is the oldest person I know & she has mild dementia so this should be fun! Of course, coupled with the fact that DD's standard answer for what did you do today is "I can't remember'! Exciting times ahead!
I will be bringing up the amount of homework & at our parent teacher conference on the 12th.

Do you really think the teacher checks the homework? Homework has no value whatsoever. A first grade teacher does not have time go through homework. I'm guessing there might be some loud parents who say she doesn't give enough, so she is trying appease those parents by giving more so they stop bothering her.
Let's be real here though. If it's too much for your kid don't do it. You are in charge at home not the teacher.
