I'm seeing conflicting reports as to when it will (theoretically) make landfall. Some reports are saying Sunday, others Oct. 5-6. I gotta gas up the car tomorrow, and do our regular grocery shopping tonight.
I'm supposed to drive up to Massachusetts next Wednesday for a work conference, so I'm hoping I get enough advance notice to cancel my hotel room without having to pay for it. it's also my birthday next week but luckily I don't have any plans. A local beer and food truck festival we wanted to attend was originally scheduled for Saturday but now they've moved it to Wednesday, which I can't attend if I wind up going on the work trip.
Most importantly ... what kinds of snacks and booze is everyone getting???
Well, the National Hurricane Center (www.nhc.noaa.gov) is saying no landfall in the next 5 days. (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/graphics_at1.shtml?5-daynl#contents)
But, it looks like coastal areas might get some winds and such as early as Monday morning...
There are probably multiple models for the storm path, which explains the conflicting reports.
When all else fails, use the French toast alert system - if the store is all out of bread, milk, and eggs, things are getting serious.
I am going to head to the grocery store tonight. I should have checked to see what we have, but it's never a bad idea to get more esp. with winter around the corner (and they are saying that may be bad, too).
I'll definitely get gas on the way home either tonight or tomorrow.
We need to charge up the lantern, etc. to make sure that's all ready.
And sort of related - I did try to throw out stuff from the fridge and freezer yesterday so that there isn't excess crap I have to deal with if the power goes out and I have to start tossing things.

If you're not tossing stuff so you can buy more, keep the old stuff in there.
A full freezer thaws slower than a partially empty one, so keeping it full actually means you may save *more* stuff. If I were you, I'd throw every freezer pack I have in there to fill in the gaps to keep things cold longer if you lose power.
Oh it's not anywhere near being empty. It was a few random things here and there - there is still plenty of stuff to keep it all insulated together.
I went to Shop Rite to buy lunch. It's already crowded.
(Not, like, OMGBUYALLTHEBREADANDMILK crowded, but way more crowded than it typically is mid-weekday.)
This does not bode well for later. My guess is that the closer we get to the weekend, the worse it will be. Let us pat ourselves on the back for being proactive

I'm going tonight. And getting gas tomorrow. Yikes.
We should start seeing rain tomorrow, they're calling for 7-14" here but it's not all based on Joaquin. It also has to do with another weather system coming from the west...or something like that.

I'm flying out of town on Sunday morning and come back on Wednesday so hopefully that will all work out.
I'll leave my car on the second floor of my company's garage but I do that whenever I'm out of town, to avoid alternate side parking nonsense. Still, considering that our old car was totaled by Sandy that's good timing.
My bonus will be much bigger if there are no major hurricanes this year so from an MM perspective I hope this ends up being hype.
Ugh...I need gas in my car so i will do that today. Hopefully I am able to drive to central NJ on Saturday because Im so excited to have an early football game on SUnday. Im also traveling next Wednesday night so it better not mess with that. I live in a town where the power goes out when the wind blows so I have no confidence I will have electric after this is done. We should make sure we have gas for the generator.
Well shit you guys are making me glad I didn't get comfy after getting back from my appointment. Guess I'm headed out to the store now. We've got a MAJOR event happening this weekend....annual thing always drives the locals indoors anyway but add this, I better get my extra food shopping down NOW.
Adios muchachas I have more Joaquin girding to do.
It's not the storm that scares me so much as the crowds annoying me. I only prep for this kind of thing way in advance because I hate being in a crowded supermarket or gas station while people around me are losing their minds.
If anything happens and we lose power for even an instant I'm going to be PISSED. I have a breastmilk stash to protect here people. I worked hard for that shit. This better not be anything.
But, DH and I have horrible track record with hurricane, so with our luck our house will probably collapse or something. I'm aggravated by this situation and I really don't think anything is going to happen.
Ok I'm back and I now feel sufficiently girded unless Mr. Foodie's parents wind up sheltering with us over the storm. Right now they'll be in a hotel room an hour away but if it looks like it's going to get bad we may bring them here.
Foodie are you in NNJ? Were the stores bad/empty already? I feel like this Christie move is premature, but I get it.

I'm in NNJ. I went to Shop Rite at lunch and it was busier than usual for that time of day, but the lines weren't long and they moved quick.
That being said, I was only at the deli counter for a sandwich. I didn't go in the back to check out the milk/bread/eggs situation. I'm doing that after I get home from work tonight. (I was planning to go grocery shopping tonight regardless of weather, though.)

I dont even need food but will go so that I have good snacks through this entire thing.
I am near Harrisbueg, PA. We were supposed to compete in a big BBQ competition but we decided to cancel. We are amateurs and don't think we are prepared to safely compete in what might be crazy weather. I'll be mad if it ends up being nothing or starting later especially since I bought like 50lbs of meat this morning. It's like a 26 hour event though so it's not like we can just pack up and run if it gets crazy.

Ugh, this has been the rainiest, soggiest Sukkot! We're supposed to have our annual open sukkah party on Saturday, but it's looking more like an open house. So bummed. But I'm adding canned goods and Starbucks VIA to our shopping list (we have a gas stove), as well as bottled water (since our water treatment plant is on the river and floods easily). We're stocked up on wine already.

I'm so used to the rain over the last 2 weeks that I didn't even consider there would be something more serious with it.
Even if it moves out to sea, they're still calling for deadly and historic rainfall/flooding. Hope you guys get less than we do!
I'm so tired of the rain, even with an abnormally dry summer.

I didn't think about water, but the river appears to be quite a bit below flood stage, so I'm hopeful it stays that way. DH has an Aeropress and hand grinder for when the power goes out, so you can always stop by if you need coffee. We have a generator, too.
I'm worried about soggy roots causing trees to blow over. Our neighborhood is prone to them and we seem to lose power if there's even a slight breeze.

You're right about the river---it's been so low all summer. I have so little faith in TWW, I suppose.
Thank you for the coffee invitation! Far and away my number one fear about losing power.
