Let's talk baby clothes! What sizes and items do you want to have on hand? How many of each? Hopefully most will be gifts but curious as to what to have. Also, do you put a onsie under a sleeper? Here's what I'm thinking, what do you think? Plain white onsies (short sleeved) - 1 pack each NB and 0-3 Plain white onsie (long sleeved) - same Cotton sleep n play - 2 GN, 2 boy, 2 girl for NB and 2 GN, 4 boy, 4 girl for 0-3 (so 4 NB and 6 0-3) Fleece sleep n play - 2 GN, 2 boy, 2 girl for NB and 2 GN, 4 boy, 4 girl 0-3 (4 NB, 6 0-3) Gowns - I was planning on 2-4 but my mom keeps buying LOL I think I have 5 already Swaddlers (sacks, swaddleme, woombie?) - 2 halo swaddlers, 2 swaddleme, 1 woombie in size small; I think 1-2 NB swaddling items "Outfits" (shirt/pants combos) - 1 GN, 3 girl, 3 boy in 0-3 month Other - 1 GN Christmas PJ; 1 girl and 1 boy outfit in NB
It's hard to say what you'll need for sure because for instance my daughter was in NB for at least a few weeks (almost a month?) and then 0-3 several months afterward. Some babies skip the NB altogether. I think you have a good mix now I'd wait until the baby arrives and you can see where you need to fill in.
We didn't do onesies underneath but we had a july baby and our next one will be a march/april baby, in a warm climate. She lived in the sleep in plays for a good while.
Stupid newb question - since you don't really know what size baby will wear once they arrive, how do you decide what outfit to wash/have ready for them to come home in and for the next few days? Or do I have to run home and start washing things after having said baby?
I found it easier to wait until the baby came to fill in anything I was missing. I had a few sleepers and a bunch of onesies in nb and 3 month. Ds was in nb for I think a couple months so I bought more sleepers after he came. I sometimes did onesies under a sleeper if I felt like he might need an extra layer, but really it is just annoying to have to do more snaps for the diaper changes

I washed everything for the most part and just figured I'd give nb clothes away if he was too big.

I'm planning on washing the GN stuff then sending my mom home to wash the rest.
I'm a big fan of snaps vs. zippers when baby is tiny . We will just have cotton and fleece sleepers on hand with a couple onsies thrown in plus 2-3 of those swaddle/sleep sacks.
Probably 5-6 newborn, 12 0-3, and 5-6 6 months to start. I find the grandmothers like to shop after babies arrival, so I am sure they won't mind picking up anything we may need after the fact. Plus also I'll need to gtf out of the house at some point..shopping is a good excuse
Stupid question, if I'm putting the baby in a gown + swaddler, does it need socks on too? I could see socks during the day when it didn't have a blanket totally around it but what about night?
I think I had like 10 onesies in NB, 4 sleepers, 2-3 pairs of cotton pants, and 5 outfits for looking cute. All in NB. E had a personalized going home outfit in carter's NB size that was a little big, and he was 7#3. He fit into it until 10#. I did bring a 0-3 month outfit to the hospital just in case. All our NB stuff was washed, and the O-3 month stuff that didn't have tags (like garage sale buys, hands me downs, etc).
As for how to dress baby... I just put a diaper under a sleeper. Nothing else. If he's wearing a onesie and swaddle, I don't bother with socks since the swaddle keeps his feet warm. He'll just kick them off anyway. I only do socks if his feet will be exposed to the air. I pretty much never put socks on when he's wearing a gown. Not sure why.
Edit: and I prefer zipper sleepers over snaps, especially for MOTN.
edit 2: fwiw, my baby was in NB until 6-8 weeks, and is still in NB in some generously sized pieces, and he's 13# now.
I'm hoping to get gift cards so I can buy clothing items as needed. I'm not sure if I'll need NB or 0-3.
My initial plan is to have at least 10x onsies, a few long sleeves, and a couple outfits. I don't want to have too many clothes if it's not necessary. I'll probably go to Once Upon A Child to get wintery items since there will still be snow here when baby arrives.
Then yard sell grown out of items to buy more clothes as needed.
And really good questions Broiler, I have no idea so I'll lurk to see if they get answered too. I'm curious too!
I'm curious about this as well. I was planning on having quite a few NB and 0-3 items, since we don't expect any gifts. I figured we'd just buy bigger sized stuff as we needed it.
ETA: I'm only 5'4" and H is only 5'9" so I don't expect we'll have a large baby who will grow out of them very quickly, but then again we could be surprised.
I didn't have enough NB, I thought DD was going to be bigger and had to go out and get more. She's in a white onesie and leggings 90% of the time. I like the footed leggings cause socks are a pain in the ass.
If she is wearing a swaddle she usually is only in a onesie.
I am the outlier and I don't like sleepers and she only has 2 or 3 and doesn't wear them often. As the weather changes that may change but they aren't my fave.
She has some gowns but really only wears those at night. They don't work with the car seat so I find them to be a pain in the ass.

I never did socks with the gown + swaddler, but you'll have to see how cold your LOs feet get.
We had maybe a weeks worth of newborn stuff. A handful of onesies, a couple pairs of pants, and 5-6 sleepers. He was out of newborn stuff within two weeks and solidly in 0-3 and 3 month clothes for a couple months. After that he grew rapidly and was wearing 9 month clothes by the time he was 4 months old, and 12 month clothes by the time he was 6 months.
I'd highly recommend scouring craigslist/facebook yardsale boards/yardsales for baby clothes. They grow out of them so fast that they barely get worn. We were given a trash bag full of boys clothes from NB to 6 months old and only had to supplement with socks and a few long sleeved onesies for the first 3 months or so.
We have a lot of NB clothes. I went ahead and washed them all. Currently, they are both swimming in NB clothes. We are only 9 days in, but other than going home from the hospital and going to the doctor, they have lived in Gerber long sleeve white onesies and swaddle blankets.

Yea, don't use your size to guesstimate baby's size. My mom was 5'4" and about 110# (her pre pregnancy weight) when I was born, dad is 5'11". I came out 9#6. I'm 5'4" now. My younger sister was 8#1 at birth, she's now 5'2" and 95# after 2 kids.
Now you know my birth weight, and DH was 5#8 at birth. Our kid was in the middle, at 7#3.
Originally I thought we had too many outfits in NB size, but most of them still fit. I also found that sizing varies a lot among different brands. Right now she's wearing NB in some brands, 0-3 in others and even 3-6! Crazy.
Regarding socks, almost none stay put, the only ones that work and that I'm loving are the Rosie Pope ones. I got a pack in Bloomingdales a while back and they're the only ones that work for her, I need to go get a few more.
It's still hot here, so she's mostly wearing little dresses or short-sleeved onesies with leggings. She wears footed sleepers to bed, we both hate gowns
I washed everything and figured I'd give away/put away anything we didn't use.
Our baby was born in the summer and lived in onesies for the first three months. We had a dozen onesies for her and needed every one for the first three months. I still keep a dozen on hand (six short sleeved and six long sleeved) as layering pieces. Yes, I do put a onesie under a sleeper even now when it is chilly. She is 15 months. She kicks off the blanket and I worry about her getting cold. I didn't worry about white versus colored onesies. She is petite and stayed in newborn clothes longer than most. Our OB was able to predict that she would be petite. Since neither DH nor I are very tall, this was not a surprise. She did not let us know her gender so most of her clothes were greens and yellows. We had two gowns, she hated the gowns so we returned the rest. Once the weather cooled, we transitioned her to sleep and play. We kept a dozen in rotation. We keep her in sleep and play through the winter because they had covered feet. Once spring arrived, we transitioned to outfits with shoes since she was trying to stand. Swaddles were wonderful for convincing her to sleep; but you have to stop using them when they begin rolling over. We kept three and rotated them. For going home outfits, we brought a newborn outfit and a 3 month outfit just in case. Both were in yellow since we didn't know the gender.

We brought a newborn and a 3 month outfit to the hospital. Ours were yellow since we didn't know the gender. My mom stayed with us the first week and spent a large chunk of the time doing baby laundry because we finally knew that our baby was a girl.
You're such a good planner boiler717. I've been buying things at random, and realized the other day I've bought a baffling 9 pairs of baby pants for this kid.

I was this way too. I had random sizes all the way up to 12 months. So I sat down and organized it all. I made a list and luckily was able to hit a large consignment sale to fill and round things out. I focused mainly on sizes up to 6 months. I figure there were be spring consignments before I need more stuff

My 9lb9oz baby skipped nb. And he was out of 0-3m by 6 weeks. So I had a decent amount of stuff that went unused. It's inevitable.
Plus, you may not know what you like until baby is here. I had lots of 0-3 onesies. But with the ac blowing he needed pants, and that made diaper changes a pita. I much preferred snap sleepers. Knowing that I bought a bunch in 3-6m. Well, then it has been so hot that our house is much warmer and I now like just a onesie, no pants.
I feel like there are pros and cons to having stuff on hand vs waiting. I personally have zero desire to head out in the dead of winter to shop for baby clothes or try to find stuff online and not have to pay full price! I did get some older baby stuff on clearance at Carters but things like leggings, jeans, all season tops so I wasn't guessing sizes. I'm also super picky and not into about 75% of the clothes I see in stores so I'm not sure how much gifts will help. P

My dd got SO many clothes as gifts and hand me downs and probably 75% of it is NMS so I feel you. Now that she's moving toward 9 mo clothes I have almost nothing for her because people bought various sizes but it's all summer stuff, and we're in New England. I'm looking forward to picking out stuff I actually like. I will never buy Carter's for anyone again (and I always used to, because it's easy) but I'm soooo bored with it now.

Right?! And why do they have the weirdest sayings on the them? "Mommy's Little Bundt Cake" or whatever. My mom keeps wanting to buy clothes and I asked to stay away from anything with words!

My summer baby was naked (lots of skin to skin time to encourage breastfeeding) or in a onesie :/
At night I would put a swaddle sack on. She hated arms in, so she had long sleeve onesies with the fold over mittens to use with the swaddled that allowed that setup. Then her reflux became so bad i put her in a rock n play to sleep and had to switch to footed sleepers so I could buckle her in. A lot of her swaddles never got used because she hated the ones that tried to confine her arms, outgrew them, or just couldn't use them anymore because she was no longer laying flat in a bassinet and I needed two free legs.
The brands all run so differently... Newborn Gerber never worked, newborn Nordstrom baby worked until recently at 12 weeks 12lbs, and her ergobaby newborn swaddle lasted only a couple weeks despite its claims of fitting to a bigger size. Socks never stay on lol. I would have a few things washed but if you have someone nearby who could help with laundry, I would hold off on washing the bulk until you see what works for you.
