So I think I've convinced DH to let me get a new sofa, and I've had this navy Chesterfield on my wishlist for literally years. It's definitely an investment piece (it's like three times the price of our current sofa!) so it's probably going to stick around for like 20 years. I love it, but I don't want to get bored...Is it daft to get navy? The alternative is like a soft grey, but I don't know. Or something different, but it needs to be a sofa bed in a kid-resistant fabric, and not obscenely expensive. (Sorry for giant pics, don't know how to/if I can resize.)

I think both of them are very classic, so you can't go wrong. The beauty of blue is that you can use so many different colours to accent it...pink, red, brown, etc. You can change accessories as you get bored.
Ooh la la! I love the navy velvet! If you have the time, could you get a blue velvet pillow to see if it collects lint/dirt for a month? And if it isn't good then you can get a grey consolation couch?
The blue is very classic; however, if you're afraid of getting bored, get grey since it seems to be a bit more versatile with what you can accessorize with.
Love them both! I think the blue one is amazing and will never go out of style, but that doesn't mean you won't get tired of it. I'd probably go with the grey in my current state of mind, but if we were talking 5-10 years from now, I'd go with the blue.

They're actually both "stain resistant velvet" ... Which I'm pretty sure is fancy microfibre. They look really good in person though - I couldn't tell they were synthetic at all.
I love the blue but I personally wouldn't put it in my family room....a sitting room or something like that, yes! I am a neutral lover and I like to switch up pillows too often to stick with a navy. They are both gorgeous!
It's lovely! The first thing I thought, though, is that the tufting might drive you bonkers if you have a pet. Dust, hair, crumbs all get stuck in there and it might be even more of a problem with velvet. When I had a tufted couch, I just got one of those detailing vacuums but there is no way I'd be up for doing that for 20 years. Also, if it really is something you'll be keeping that long, I think navy would be a lot more apt to fade. Is leather an option?
I have always loved the look of chesterfields. What I didn't realize until we were recently shopping for a new couch is how uncomfortable they are. As a side sofa or chair I think they would be fine but we wanted something comfortable for our main sofa. Make sure you go sit in one (or something like it) before you order it site unseen.
I find navy to be a neutral. I have a oversized navy leather chair that I have had for 15 years now. Over the years, I have placed it in a burgundy and pink room, an ivory room, a tan room, an apple green room, and currently a pale blue and beige room.
I love the chesterfields, and your blue option in particular.
It's such a classic, I feel like the blue is a color you could do so much more with. Think of it as a good pair of Levi 501s- the looks you can coordinate are pretty much endless. Not so much with the gray which is "having a moment" as it did in the 1950s.
I could see that sofa in a pale gray room with yellow or apple green accents> I could also see it in a classic formal room painted pale yellow with delft inspired blue and white accents. It would work well with reds from barn to tomato. It would be gorgeous with khaki walls and luggage tan accents.

I noticed on Urban Outfitters the other day that they have very inexpensive similar sofas - they convert to beds. They don't have a great navy option, but for only $750 you could do gray until it starts to age and then go with a new one then.

DowntoEarth - thank you Sadly I'm in the UK and I don't think UO stock it over here (although we do have UO here now). This one's also designed for potentially sleeping on every night - it's super comfy both as a bed and as a couch, so I don't mind spending a lot considering those things. Appreciate the suggestion though.
