I'm toying with the idea of flying to NYC instead of driving this week, but tickets are like $600, which is stupid. It's like a 6-7 hour drive there from where I am, but I'm a little concerned about driving my car since it's 12 years old and I just had a major mechanical repair. With my luck it'll break down when I'm 5 hours away from home.
The Priceline 'name your price' tool *seems* like a good deal. Is it worth doing it this way? I put in $225 as the price, it put it as $268 with taxes and fees.
The whole "The airlines will choose your flight times. Your trip will start between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. and you will arrive no later than 12:30 a.m. the next day" could really suck though, right?
I've only done it for hotels (awesome) but not flights. I thought you could pick like a 4 hour time window though, not all day. A 4 hour time window wouldn't be bad.
You're only 6-7 hours away and it's $600? That's insane.

Exactly. Both my flights to Texas and California cost less than $300.

I've done it and would do it again. But I don't really mind waiting around in airports and changing flights a couple of times if it's going to save me a boat load of money and the hassle of driving myself. I'm pretty laid back, though.
I did it once to travel to my parent's house and had super early travel times with long layovers. I prefer having control over flight times so I've never done it again.

I've done it many, many times for hotels and cars.
But flights parameters are too broad and there are too many variables to leave up in the air when traveling with kids so we've never used it for that part.
Not for flights I'm too picky. My college roommate used back when it started. There were limited flights where she lived. She used it to go home over breaks.
Do you have any flexibility on destination or dates? Because New York really is not a place to drive to. Depending on where you're staying, driving itself can be a nightmare and parking can be ungodly expensive. If you want to drive somewhere, New York may not be an ideal destination. If you want to go to New York, maybe waiting for a better airfare would help?
If you do go for a rental car, drop it off as soon as you get in the city and get another one on the way out. You will not need it or want it while in the city.

What I typically do is drive to the Newark NJ airport and park there, where it is significantly cheaper, then take the train into the city.
Also, I'm going to NYC for a comic con I already have tickets for, soooo no rescheduling
