My work is not customer focused and my boss is Muslim (so generally works all around Christmas other than the 2 stats we get). I can take whatever time I want, if I have the days for it.
Now I work foe the state and I get thursday and friday off at thanksgiving and the week between xmas and ny.
My wife gets the same, plus Xmas eve. It's awesome. She's also taking vacation the day before Thanksgiving and the 3 days before Xmas eve for a round two weeks.
I am in grad school and not working so mine is a whole different story, but I'll have the same time off as she does. My old job was whatever vacation time you have first come first served for approval (someone had to work all days we were open).
old job we were on a rotation so one you you had to work a major holiday (thanksgiving, christmas, NY), and the other year a minor holiday (memorial day, 4th of july, labor day).
new job I don't think I'm required to work any holidays but we need a SW in town within 4 days of both holidays to see patients within our 4 day window.
its kind of informal, we just say when we'd like off and as long as 1-2 people from the team are around it's usually fine.
I normally come in on black Friday, H has that day off so the daycare closing doesn't cost us any vacation days.
around Christmas I normally take 1-2 weeks off and go to Ireland. I've never been told I can't go. This year we are sticking around here so I assume I'll just take a couple days maybe.
My H's company gives them two days for Christmas, and they can take the rest of the week unpaid if they want. Since he is in sales and makes most of his money in commission its not such a big $ cut if he does take the whole week.
Well my old job you could take time off whenever, as long as your backup wasn't off too. I usually never took off around the holidays. I was planning to have week of Christmas off since my daycare is closed.
I just started a new job so I'm not sure if I'll be able to take any time off. My mom is home during Christmas break so can watch the kids. I'm not even sure what days we are closed.
This is why I love working for a university. We get Thanksgiving day and the day after and that entire week is a very light week. If I want to take more itme off, I can.
Then we close the week between Christmas and NYE and most people take extra days before or after.
We get Thur and Fri of TG off and Christmas Day and either the day before or day after off depending on how it falls. I usually take the rest of the week as vacation - not an issue at my company.

We have to work all holidays but we are rotated through, so we work every other holiday each year. This year I work thanksgiving, off Christmas, and work NYE. Since I work overnights it doesn't bother me too much to work the holidays because I just work all night and then stay up all day for the holiday. I just don't ever host on the years I work. The bad thing is traveling to the ILs out of state, that can get pretty complicated sometimes. DH gets all holidays off, including Black Friday and the whole week between Christmas and New Years. We try to travel during that week but I can't always get enough time off. We can take vacation days but it goes by seniority.

I always wondered, what grad program are you in?
Masters of social work. I often question my sanity. I have worked in the field for several years with my previous masters in psychology, but due to some licensing stuff I need a degree in social work to really advance or be able to open a private therapy practice. So here I am. Being in school and not working gives me more time to spend with my kids than working FT would though, so I like that part a lot.
People in my office typically take off lots of time around both holidays. The building is usually closed even, and anyone who comes to work has to go to a satellite location. But, we only get one day of holiday for each, so the rest all has to come from our vacation time. This is problematic for me, because I am trying to hoard all my leave for my next hopeful maternity leave. So I will probably be working, alone, in some random building with no access to my desk. (seriously, last year only 4 people came in to the office and 2 of those were H and I.)
We have to have coverage in the office so we usually rotate. Day after Thanksgiving everyone wants off so I work it every other year. The years I work are awful cause I still get up early to Black Friday shop
DH's company has day after Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve already off. But for other times they do it based on seniority.

We *would* be able to take off as much time as we want around the holidays, but I am in tax and my company has a crappy year end and an even crappier year end close schedule, so last year I had Thanksgiving and Black Friday off, but had to work some Christmas Eve and then Dec 26-31. My old company gave us Christmas week off and I was so spoiled.

As a matter of courtesy to my co workers, I wouldn't ask off both Christmas and thanksgiving. We also have to be on call and have to rotate those holidays as well. I typically take the Wednesday before thanksgiving off, or at least a half day, for travel and don't take days off around Christmas since I already get Christmas eve and Christmas day off anyway, as well as NYE and NYD.
I work in a hospital so you can usually get one day off of the three depending on what everyone else wants. This will be my 5th Xmas eve working. Luckily dh gets lots of time off at the holidays
Out of courtesy and because we have a small office, we have a loose agreement to take time at one or the other, but not both. We also get the Fri after thanksgiving off anyway, so it's not too bad if you don't take time then.
Love of my life baby boy born 11/11. One and done not by choice; 3 years of TTC yielded 4 MMC and 2 CPs, through 4 IUIs and 2 IVFs. Focusing on making the world a better place instead...and running.
We don't travel during the holidays. My ILs and my parents know that Santa only comes to our house. My parents are local, and aren't super into Christmas, so they don't care. My ILs are pissed, but neither H nor I care. LOL.
To answer your question, I am a teacher so I get all the time off. DH works at a school, but in IT. He gets W-F off at Thanksgiving, and gets Christmas Eve and Christmas day off. He can take whatever else he wants, though. He typically doesn't, because they get a ton of work done when students aren't in the building.
There's no official rule and I think the social expectation is that you only have one "big" holiday. Taking Wednesday before T-Giving and then a week at Christmas is fine.
Also if there is a deadline in January that all goes out the window.
My H's current job has weird rules about taking off around the holidays because it is a busy time of year for them (HVAC service/installs-- they need to be able to respond to no heat calls or problems). Basically, they will approve a vacation over the holidays, but taking an extra day or 2 around holidays "just because" is severely frowned upon/outright forbidden.
We can request time off, but whether or not the request is granted depends on when the request was made, seniority, history of requests from previous years, and overall staffing levels.
Since we don't travel for any holiday anymore, and my office gives us Christmas eve and NY's eve off, I don't really ask for time off around then.
I'm a fed, so we only get the actual holidays off. That said, people are usually taking off and using up leave, so it's NBD to be off.
DH's company is closed thanksgiving and BF as well as the week between Christmas and New Year's. So if I had to come in, he would be home since daycare is closed. (Although last year he went in and didn't get holiday pay for it, so there's no way I'm letting him pull that again.)
Our US office is closed Thanksgiving and day after and 2 days for Christmas.
Otherwise someone from the team needs to work, but people can take both holidays off usually.
I generally take neither because I'm a sucker. This year I had mat leave and I've had to take time (and will take more) to deal with my Dad's estate, I'm probably not taking any time. Maybe 12/23.
I work in a hospital, so we obviously need 24/7 coverage. We work it out amongst ourselves in each individual unit.
We consider it as being 6 holiday days--3 major days (the "Days") and 3 minor days (the "Eves" and Black Friday). Full time staff has to work 3 of those 6 days, with at least 1 of them being a major day. We attempt to be fair by keeping the sign up sheet from year to year, so we know who worked what last year. We all want to work NYE/NYD and have off Christmas but that won't work.
So for instance, last year I worked Black Friday, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. It is not expected that I will work Christmas at all, and I will likely work Black Friday, and NYE/NYD.
Any extra time around the holidays themselves will either be PTO or just lucky scheduling.

Oh this makes me feel better. I was on hospital bed rest 3 years ago over New Years and I felt bad. My nurses were so nice though!
Even though the market is open the day after Thanksgiving, we never work.
So I always have Thursday & Friday off for Thanksgiving. We usually travel.
I have usually worked a half day on Christmas Eve, and then gotten Christmas Day off. In recent years, we have been closing on Christmas Eve as well (despite the market being open) so I get both days off. I do not like to travel for Christmas, so I don't mind working Christmas Eve if necessary. Most of my coworkers take quite a few days off either before or after Christmas.
I'm not sure - I was with the company last year, but as a contractor, so I had no time off - I worked everything but the actual holidays we were closed. I recall things being verrrrrrrry slow around Christmas, so I'm guessing it won't be a huge deal to take a little time off around either holiday.
My last company, we were closed the Friday after T'giving, which was awesome, and we had a shut down usually the last two weeks of the year - you could still work, but it made it really easy to take time off if you wanted.
