We have just a savings account as of right now. I know we should do something else with it but the 529 plan does make me nervous. What if he wants to go to a trade school? My BIL who is in finance said it doesn't apply.
Is he sure? I know for a fact that a CA 529 plan paid for a child's HVAC trade school tuition, one of our clients did this. It definitely qualified for the program fees and materials. It depends on the institution, I would think. This is helpful: www.irs.gov/uac/529-Plans:-Questions-and-Answers
IDK if he's sure. I'll look into this! Thank you. It's weighing on me a bit. I'd like to get the most from his saving account because I doubt we'll be able to save for his entire college experience but we're hoping for at LEAST half an asshole.
We don't. We aren't vehemently against them or anything, we're just stretched pretty thin right now with two in full time daycare. We also don't have strong aspirations to fund their education, but would hope to have the money to help them if we can do it without detracting from saving for our retirement and without negatively affecting our lifestyle as they grow.
Like for example we'd like to buy a small house up north and get family ski passes each winter when they are older. If saving for college meant that sort of thing became impossible, I'd rather spend that money then than save it.
We have good intentions of starting a 529 soon. Just need to get around to it. I can't imagine my kid won't do some sort of education post-high school. And he'll absolutely be raised with the expectation of going to college. If none of that happens, we'll cross the bridge when we get there.

Half a what? Lol...
It has been posited that persons who have their education paid for in full become assholes.
Thus, if you only have half your education funded, you will only be half an asshole.
Yes. We've done it. We'll also save elsewhere and max it out at CSU in state tuition or something.
Yes, there is a risk. If the kids get some sort of awful, expensive fatal illness then I'll regret tying the money up. Otherwise I'm sure it will get used somewhere.
You can get the money back if she doesn't go to college.
I expect my children to pay for their own college. I paid for mine; there is no silver spoon or golden ticket here. DH paid for 1000% of his childrens' college, including all associated expenses so that little preshuses wouldn't have to work at all, and it has not turned out well.
We get it. You don't like your step kids. And the feeling sounds mutual.

Jesus Christ. No, I don't. It certainly isn't from lack of trying on my part. I have spent the past nine years trying to build a relationship with them. I give up. I can't beat my head on the wall anymore regarding them. I wish it was different, but it isn't. If a popular poster said the same thing, you'd be saying 'yay, boundaries!' But I'm considered to be an asshole and generally disliked, so I'm flamed. Goodbye.
Really? I don't think so, I think a lot of people would have a problem with that. I did call you an asshole once before but that was only because you said people that slept in past 6 are lazy, IIRC. lol. It was an asshole thing to say! I guess some of the stuff you say just comes off a little assholish.
