I am old-ish (40) and am starting to get some darker spots. I also don't like thicker foundations because they settle in my little wrinkles and make those stand out. And thicker stuff makes me break out. My dad has has numerous chunks of skin on his face removed because of skin cancer, so I refuse to use a foundation that doesn't have SPF in it. It goes on light and you can layer it if you want more coverage.
Lately, I am liking Koh Gen Do foundation -- you can get it from Sephora so it is easily returned, and was developed by a Japanese woman so it has a decent shot of being good for Asians. I find the coverage very natural.
But I agree that you should emphasize treating the problem over just covering it up. I really like Nadinola cream for age spots. It is less than $10 at drugstore.com. Also, sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, etc. to the extent you can...
