Ds's teacher got to meet xh today. The real xh... i was horrified, and embarassed, and despite my frustration with her i felt sorry for her.
What happened?
Try not to be too horrified and embarrassed. You have no control over his behavior.
He became irate when she explained that she may (as a step WAY down the road) have to ask for a sp. ed. referral to deal with ds's behavior. Xh went off telling her that HIS son does not need special ed, he needs her to do her job. Then he tried to tell her that ds probably doesn't listen to her because she's a woman. After that he proceeded to explain how he was discarded into sped and it made him beat kids up because he was stuck in there "with all the retards" (his exact words).
It went on for 45 minutes. The teacher handled it pretty well, and kept her cool. But she made it very clear at the end, in a very nice way, that she would continue to communicate with me and i could relay the information to xh.

His crap is not needed in such a difficult situation.
How do you feel about the teachers recommendation, exh's antics aside?
It's a little early for it quite frankly. She seems to have misdiagnosed ds as being on the spectrum and alluded to it several times although xh was too busy on his own rant to pay attention to that.
Ds's appointment with the pediatrician is today, so I'm hoping that she will be able to help us.

As someone who is having mixed thoughts/concerns/worries about her own child, I feel you. I hope the pedi can help.

This concerns me because teacher expectations can have such an impact on students' outcomes. Some people who've worked with ASD a good amount see spectrum features (for lack of a better way to phrase it) everywhere. Sort of like I see the effects of trauma all the time.

She told us that she has a background in special education, so I'm guessing that is why she was so quick to jump to ASD. I'm hoping that the pediatrician can give us all more appropriate information that we can act on.
