I think there needs to be a mandatory and lengthy waiting period to purchase a gun, and it should require a license.
I think we slap a mandatory higher age on not only gun ownership, but gun use, on states -- just like we did with the drinking age. If your state doesn't like that, you can forfeit ETA: federal aid, just like we do with the drinking age.
I think all gun owners need to be subjected to a background check. I think you need to pass a test and mental health exam to re-new you gun license.
I think your guns and how and where they are stored should be subject to inspections, just like your fucking car.
I think if you gun is used in a crime -- whether it is stolen, whether your child takes it -- you ass rots in jail until the end of days.
I think we stop letting the far right get away with this narrative that the whole world is out to get them and they need to stock pile for the end of days. Newsflash, you are idiots. Conservative politicians know this and exploit it because they need these nutbags. I'd respect them more if they called these dangerous people on their bullshit.
And finally, I think shame is great. I think we can and should stop tip toeing around gun owners, less we upset their delicate feelings. We did a pretty great job of shaming cigarette smokers into quitting, guns can be next.
I think there needs to be a mandatory and lengthy waiting period to purchase a gun, and it should require a license.- I agree. Where do you get this license?
I think we slap a mandatory higher age on not only gun ownership, but gun use, on states -- just like we did with the drinking age. If your state doesn't like that, you can forfeit state aid, just like we do with the drinking age.-once again I agree the minimum age should be 21
I think all gun owners need to be subjected to a background check. I think you need to pass a test and mental health exam to re-new you gun license.- what kind of mental health check? Who is doing them? What conditions prohibit you from owning a gun? This is a slippery slope and I don't like it at all.
I think your guns and how and where they are stored should be subject to inspections, just like your fucking car.- once again by whom? How are you even going to know who has guns? Who is payments my for this wonderful service?
I think if you gun is used in a crime -- whether it is stolen, whether your child takes it -- you ass rots in jail until the end of days.- yep I agree.
I think we stop letting the far right get away with this narrative that the whole world is out to get them and they need to stock pile for the end of days. Newsflash, you are idiots. Before someone accuses me of being a gun nut please know I would get rid of our guns tomorrow if a law was passed and we were told to.
However the majority of you have no idea what it's like to live in a gun friendly state. You have no idea about the mindset of people here. You have no idea what you are even talking about when referring to guns. It's a different world. Unless both parties are willing to meet in the middle nothing will ever change.
See -- who pays for it is where people lose me 100%. Because that is basically saying "Welp, keep on shooting shit up and killing first graders, I'm not paying to fix that." We let society fester to this point, so now we pay for our mistakes.
You make every single gun something that needs to be registered and accounted for. I mean, we do this with parcels of land, we do it with cars, you can do it with guns.

I mean, I know Texas is full of lunatics. We all get it.
But it's just kind of insulting -- this idea that you have to water down effective policy change to accommodate people who are so completely inflexible. I mean, tell me about the last time the NRA compromised, and then show me the outrage from "responsible gun owners" because they didn't. It never happens.

We are not a member of the NRA and they disgust us. Your extreme views on this don't help anyone either. You paint every gun owner with the same brush. I want gun control! I want this violence to end! I just as terrified one day it will be my kid as you are!
That being said am I actively campaigning for gun control in Texas?no, not because I don't think it's a good cause but because I am fighting for women to even fucking get healthcare in our state. And no I don't have the time and energy for both.
See -- who pays for it is where people lose me 100%. Because that is basically saying "Welp, keep on shooting shit up and killing first graders, I'm not paying to fix that." We let society fester to this point, so now we pay for our mistakes.

Yes new purchases absolutely, but if you really think people are going to willing register the guns they own you are smoking something.
That's so scary, I hadn't heard about that happening yet.
We need mental healthcare reform with or without the mass shooting epidemic we are experiencing as a nation. Mental healthcare is based on self-reported information for the most part. Unless you demonstrate that you are a danger to yourself or to others, no one can force you to receive treatment. When you are being treated that information is not going to show up on a background check most of the time- it's protected information.
While mental healthcare reform is a dire need in our country, that alone is not enough. Just like gun reform is not enough. It's a multi-faceted issue.
More people are killed a year from drunk drivers than guns. On that logic shouldn't we be lobbying to get rid of alcohol?
Bullshit argument number #2. No. How many times does someone picking up a drink with the intention of drinking it end with someone dead? How many times does someone picking up a gun with the intention of shooting it does someone end up dead? Look, any time someone is killed it's tragic. Losing someone to a drunk driver is no less heartbreaking and soul shattering than losing someone to an act of gun violence. But come on. Apples and oranges. Gun violence is an undeniable problem in our country, and it needs to be addressed. It needs to end. That drunk driving is an additional problem does nothing to negate the need for stricter gun controls.
We've hit the "But mental illness!" argument and the "But booze!" argument. What's next on the "Mass shootings give me the sads, but MY GUN!!" list?
Oh, so just because the drunk doesn't mean to kill someone but the gun owner does makes the booze ok for everyone but we need to get rid of all the guns? People died in both scenarios; lots of them. Being for getting rid of all guns but not being for getting rid of all alcohol is hypocritical. Both need to be appropriately regulated but getting rid of both of them in their entirety is impractical at best.
I said it before and I'll say it again; I hate guns. I would never allow a gun in my house. Hell I would feel uncomfortable letting my kids go to someone else's house that had guns even if they were responsible gun owners. Do I think that it should be equally as hard to get a gun as it is to get an abortion or a drivers license? Absolutely. Do I think getting rid of the guns is going to help this issue of people mass murdering? Absolutely not. I think the deranged person who hasn't had appropriate access to mental health because it blows in our country will find another way. That doesn't mean we don't need gun legislation. We do. I don't think the gun legislation would have any significant impact on these events from happening and if we are just legislating guns and not focusing any efforts into mental health this is just going to keep happening.
