Guys, I'm sorry for the Fox News link. I really am. It was linked by a Facebook "friend" (using the term super loosely. I met this person at my son's school. She is a BSC Trump supporter). She tagged her dh and wrote "Lol DH. This would be you and I."
I actually de-friended a guy on FB for sharing that story yesterday. I got tired of his ignorant rants and posts so I decided he had to go with that one.

They are teaching about Religions in Georgia so of-course the kids are getting homework dealing with Islam. As a result, all the people with questionable English and a lack of teeth are all over the damn news complaining.
I have various people whose political opinions I disagree with on Facebook, but for the most part they are smart people and can express their beliefs coherently. This person scares the shit out of me b/c she is who I see as a consummate Trump supporter. She is dumb as rocks and that is an awful thing to say about someone but she just believes whatever scary ass crap her church throws at her. And she is raising 4 kids. It scares me so much.

I've been in numerous discussions about "It's not about Islam. They are teaching religions in various contexts, none contextually but about how the regions are affected by the religions. There will be Islam and the Middle East, Buddhism and Japan, Hinduism and India, EUROPE AND CHRISTIANITY, etc." Fundamentalists are idiots.
iammalcolmx, no, I've missed it, but that's probably because for the past few weeks, I haven't seen many local stories. I just let out the heaviest sigh. I can't deal with these people who think information = indoctrination. It's just too stupid to address. Like maybe if she understood more about Islam, she wouldn't be embarrassing herself all over the television and internet. And Georgia is the last place where and kind of factual information needs to be withheld, honestly.

I swear if I see a teacher say "we can't teach about Christianity but we have to teach about Islam!" I will call them out in front of Facebook, God, and 8 pound 7 oz baby Jesus.

My cousin who lives in Georgia shared this photo and was all "go Mom, I'd do the same thing!!!." She's always been a box of rocks, but usually not so outright ignorant.
Then again, per Facebook she "likes" 2 books: the Bible and 50 Shades of Gray so...
Anyone have a link to a rebuttal (written by someone less lazy than me), so I can post it as reply to my IDIOT cousin's FB post on it? Or maybe I should just block this idiot cousin.... Ugh.

I would bet against her having actually read the whole bible.

My public high school had a whole "Bible as Literature" course. Which I'm sure in and of itself offended plenty of people.

I would be tempted to go with sarcasm: "Learning about other cultures and countries is such a weird idea. I mean, when are they ever going to use this knowledge? When was the last time you saw ISIS or gas prices or a Middle Eastern country in the news?"

This makes me sad. In sophomore English, we read Barrabas, which prompted my Hindu friend to ask me about Christianity, which resulted in several respectful and thought-provoking discussions about religion. And ultimately, those discussions helped both of us academically because religion is a frequent them in literature and history.
I remember advocating to my parents when I was 17 that schools should teach an objective course on the major world religions. Of course, I also recognized at 17 that it would be incredibly difficult to implement because teachers are human and therefore may evangelize. I'm not sure I considered the ignorant parent protest risk, though.

I took the New Testament as literature in college and it was an amazing class.

I took intro to the Bible and it was really good, probably favorite class outside my major (Baptist college so it was required). It really pissed off the Evangelicals that the guy with the highest grade in the class was an atheist.

Offended because it was "as Literature" as opposed to "as fact"?

My mom took Bible as Literature at her Catholic college.

Also religion plays such a big part in world history having a basic knowledge of the main ones can be helpful in understanding context

I had to do this also. Ashamed at how many common friends commented supporting his bs post.

He's actually a pretty cool guy in person and never says ignorant things but wow, once he gets on Facebook he completely changes.
