My mom and sister fly in tomorrow and I can't wait for them to see the life we are creating here. My mom texted me that she may be the most excited to see Winnie. Thanks! Ha.
The weekend after that we are going to try to take Winnie for her first outing to NJ. She does fairly well in the carrier if we leave it closed and feed her treats but we haven't ventured too far and definitely need to work on this more. I think we'll also bring her white noise machine and try to see if she can tolerate the train at all. I know she'd love the house once we got there and she's already met and liked my MIL. She just has to make it one hour.
Winnie is doing so much better. She seems like she's really starting to bond with us, and I had prepared myself for the possibility that it just may have never happened given everything she'd been through. It's so sweet to see her let us in and learn to trust. And my husband is absolutely smitten, which makes my heart feel full -- particularly because neither of us really expected that. He's so good with her. And it feels good to share this together.
If only my new job started to feel more natural, I would have very little to complain about.
I don't think I ever thanked you guys for your good vibes and prayers for my friend's nephew, but he woke up, he is talking and going through physical therapy now. We are hopeful that he will start school next month !
DH has been away for work most of the week, but he flies home this evening, so I'm happy about that. DS is still spreading by the rumor that he is coming home this weekend, but this is the third weekend in a row, so I don't think I'm going to get my hopes up. Every week, I keep shopping to make some good meals for him and nothing. Debating whether to even bother today.
I need to do some work, but I'm giving serious consideration to going back to bed. Happy Friday !
I ran for a total of 10 minutes today - which I haven't done in months. It was great! I had missed it so much, I hope to ease back into it as long as my body cooperates.
ETA: H wasn't able to fix our furnace after all. Here's hoping it's nothing major and doesn't cost us an arm and a leg.
I just realized that October 21, 2015 is the "Back to the Future" day, and that's also (coincidentally) the night of the big 80s themed event we're planning at work. Our company was founded in 1985 (the "Back to the Future" year) and we're celebrating the company's 30th anniversary.
I'm trying to get my supervisor to dress up as Marty McFly. That would actually be a very easy costume to put together!
We are hosting a bbq/gathering tomorrow evening, after a group of us are doing a volunteering thing all day.
So, that means we have no time to do any actual preparation tomorrow. My plan is to go pick up a bunch of stuff tonight and just hope it all works out tomorrow...
tacom I'm so glad Winnie is doing better! I'm going to Louisiana to see my sister in two weeks, I've already told her I'm really there to see her basset hound.
My office is insanely quiet. Four out of my five coworkers are out.
PSA: It's flu shot season. If you can/are willing, make sure to get vaccinated.
PSA #2: It's close to open enrollment and for some that also means that you can contribute to charitable organizations with direct payroll deductions. Again, if you can/are willing, it's something to look into.
I am now caught up on American Horror Story Hotel.
Did anyone watch? What did you think?
I think all the characters fit their role really well. I started singing "Hotel California" right before it started playing during the episode. Mr. P laughed and I'm all, "You had to know it was coming."
Yowzer, I had a bad dream last night that the organization rescinded my job offer after I told them I was pregnant in my counter offer. Then when I gently told them that is illegal they suggested I hire an attorney.
I woke up right after and it was impossible to fall back asleep!
Bf and I went out last night to watch a hockey game, and there was a point where I realized it was Thirsty Thursday in a college town and we were by far the oldest people there. Lol. Sometimes I forget we are as old as we are.
I started reading "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" earlier this week. I am slowly realizing that there are certain classic scifi/fantasy books that I have never read, and that perhaps I ought to remedy that...
It's a very weird book. I'm enjoying it, but it's bizarre. I bought the full five book trilogy for my kindle, so the plan is to read all them.
Yay for Friday! It's my last day in my current job and I actually have some work to do. A big report that I wrote came back with comments that I need to address (shouldn't take long to do that). But a coworker sent me a manuscript to review today. And when I told her that I might not get to it since I have a lot of other thing to wrap up today, she said that next week was okay too. She knows I am moving next week. Um, thanks.

I drove an hour to carmax and they gave me $1k less than the dealer. So I guess I'm selling my car on Craigslist. Good thing I'm meeting up with a friend for lunch to make this worth it.
Good luck with Winnie, tacom! If the white noise machine is unwieldy to bring along, download the Relax Melodies app. It has lots of soothing sounds to choose from (including white noise, but in case "heartbeat" or whatever is more soothing to her, there are choices).
A friend just texted me out of the blue for a gift recommendation ... for a cat
The guy behind me at work watches Starcraft II on Twitch.tv all day long. Not full screen or anything, but it is always going. I don't get how The Kids These Days get any work done.
The City Housing Authority let the domain name for their "yes, I'm still on the waitlist" website expire. Thankfully I know I can just google the same thing and get a link that works, but this is another one of those "programs for the poor are poor programs" things. Ugh.
Today I'm terribly pissed at my school. I'm getting my masters in Finance, which is typically a male dominated field, so I'm used to hearing a sexist comment here and there, even from faculty members. I'm also the only woman at work, so I'm used to hearing comments there as well.
But now my school has reached a new low on their sexist bullshit. Just this week they have sent us two job postings that only men are allowed to apply.
I'm enraged and sad at how we are treated like second class citizens. And what it's worst is that even if I complain, nothing is going to change. I'm so tired of living in this crappy sexist country.

My cousin just sent me a text.
I'm here early! I'm on campus at the student union!
Not the 6 pm eta he gave me the last time we talked. And although u am standing firm in the fact that I cannot leave work early today, I am not looking forward to the commentary trying to convince me otherwise.

I wouldn't call myself a crusader, but this here is some bullshit. I'd have to speak to someone. What a slap in the face while they happily collect your tuition.
Fucking sexist ass wipes.
ETA: Mr. P nor I are experienced with labor or equality laws, but this sounds illegal.

Yes, if I can't apply to their job postings I should also require a discounted tuition.
I don't live in the US so I don't know if this is legal here, I'd have to check it out. It's not the first time that I see a job posting that says men only, though.
DH is also pissed that the postings say gender instead of sex. We joke that I should apply anyway and say that my gender is male and see their speechless faces.

She's not in America, you guys.
I'm shocked they can put that in a job ad, though. I'd complain to the school and probably apply anyway. I wonder what would happen if you changed your name to a male version and see if they want to interview you. What a surprise that would be!
(Yes, I realize probably a bad idea because I'm sure it's a small industry).
I honestly don't know if this is legal where I live. I guess it's not, but employers get away with a lot of this bullshit anyway.
See my previous post, they were ignorant enough to say gender instead of sex, so I would like to apply, lie and say my gender is male and watch their faces.
sfy, that is HUGE! So happy to hear. Thanks for all of the encouragement with Winnie everyone. It's been an experience and I hope I have many more happy updates.
My 4th grader came home from school yesterday and said he and his friends learned sign language at school. I asked if it was for a class and he said, "No. We noticed at recess that there weren't many 4th graders in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing class, so we asked the DHH teacher if she would teach us some sign language so we could ask them to play with us." The DHH teacher taught them all their names in sign language and how to say, "Do you want to play tag with me?" They were all really excited to make new friends and learn sign language.
Best part? The kid who came up with the idea is the kid who two years ago was the class bully. He was horrible, parents were always in the office, etc. They worked hard to get him out of the bully phase he was in and all the kids will tell you how much he changed. But this was just awesome!
