We know where our tank openings are, but have no idea of the exact size and where drainage is and I'd rather not depend on FIL's recollection from when they built in 1970. We are redoing our deck and may put in a winter ice rink so need to figure it out.
I tried shoving a metal rod thing (it was the suggested tool) but I swear I hit every rock in the yard. Is metal detector the next step or is that only helpful for the covers? Would a septic company know where to find everything?
The town had plans at one point but the attic they were stored in had a roof leak and they lost a ton of old ones. FIL only has drawings from the new house they rebuilt after the fire so I his copies must have been lost then.
The septic company should be able to give you an idea of where the fields are. Our inspector from the septic company was able to tell very quickly just by looking.
But yes to PP, LOL. Our septic field location was very clearly outlined during our drought this summer.
You may also want to check with your village/township to see if they have any info. In our township, the septic tanks need to be inspected before sale so they have info on record of the location of the tanks and drain field.
In my town, the as-built septic plans are under the purview of the town's Health District and aren't at town hall. Have you confirmed that your plans really were destroyed?

Check with your city/county. Even in the 70's you needed a drawing to install septic in our area, but it could just be a picture drawn by your FIL or contractor not to scale, so it could or could not help.
City was not successful. I confirmed with the listed contact that they don't have them. Family sales here don't require a title V here so we didn't. Fingers crossed fall leads to some greener than average grass.
