Mine only worked in the front and not in the back - I had back labor the entire time and I felt EVERYTHING when the critter delivered and stitching afterward.
I didn't get an explanation though it's partially my fault that I don't know. The next day the anesthesiologist came in to ask me how the epidural worked or if I had any issues but I was sofaking tired and dealing w/ the new baby that I just said, "fine" and dismissed him.
Idiot me..
I wish I had asked though because if we have another one I'd like to know what to expect.. I guess I'll just tell them what happened...

"Unusual spinal anatomy"
My back was extremely bruised and multiple people attempted, including the chief of anesthesiology . I have permanent pain in my spine. It's not awful, just feels like a bruise.
The most painful thing was right after pushing, when my placenta did not come out and the doctor had to go in and grab it by hand..
They had to do this for me too, with no epi working. It was so awful. And then I was hemorrhaging so she thought there was some retained placenta so the Dr was all up in there "pumpkin scooping" my insides with her hand. They didn't find any retained placenta but lots of tiny lacerations and she needed to do some internal stitching way up in there as well. I almost passed out from the pain and finally they gave me a shot of fentanyl. Which didn't do much but make me throw up
I really pray any future deliveries go smoother! An elective c section sounds nice sometimes, lol.
My epidural with DD2&3 was fucking awful. It took over 90 minutes to place, and finally the chief of anesthesiology got it. I was comfortable for like 2 hours and then they had to keep upping it because it stopped working. When we converted to a c/s in the OR it took like 20 minutes for them to get me numb enough and then they had to keep giving me shots in my shoulder during the procedure because I was in so much pain. I was so fucking happy when they finally put me under with general.
Moral of the story, I think that sometimes it is just a fluke. Or, the second hospital I delivered at just sucks.
I had a neurological reaction to my epi. On top of that it only took on one side. I wanted another with DD2 but had a precip labor and didn't have time to have one put in. I'm almost glad I didn't have the chance to get another because I was so scared of having another reaction.
Mine worked for about 45 minutes and kept wearing off, no matter how much they turned it up or other drugs they gave me. I was told by someone that back labor can be hard to pain manage, but I really don't know.
This was my experience with #1. I presumed it was just back labour. Then with #2 I had one that worked, and I am really sure I still had back labour.
My epidural for my first labor didn't take nearly as well as the one for my second labor. I don't know if I would say that it didn't work, but I was in a ton more pain through the pushing process with my first child. With my second, I was all "oh, so this is how it should have been."
This is essentially my story. I knew my first one didn't work because people spoke about sleeping though transition - LOLOLOLOL. NOPE. Except then I had my second and it worked and I totally slept through a ton of it.
I never got an explanation. The second doc asked me if I had told my first doc about my scoliosis and I said yes, and it's like, OVERLY noticeable, but I never found out why the first one didn't work.
Wait, you're supposed to be able to sleep through transition? Ah, maybe this is why I don't have that "I loved my epi and am so glad I got one feeling." I broke out in a cold sweat and was very close to vomiting from the intense pressure of DS descending during transition. My very loud moans were what basically signaled the doctor to check if I was dilated enough to push and I was.

So I guess this means the epi failed?
I won't ever know if mine failed entirely or just wasn't as effective as it could have been. Based on the doc/nurse reactions, it didn't do much.
With my second I didn't feel intense pressure til 9cm!!!
And just thinking about this is confirming that I am done.
Mine only worked on one side, and stopped working at all pretty quickly. I got a little relief when they re-bolused me, but then it was turned off so I could push.
They didn't really give me an explanation. I know epis are hit or miss, so I didn't really ask.
