I like the idea of having labels with little descriptions for things. I'm open to trying just about anything, as long as I have an idea of what to expect.
I live in an area where ethnic food is very limited, and Americanized significantly. If I threw a party with any kind of ethnic food (aside from "Mexican"), I would provide some kind of appetizer/cheese/veggie platter that could feed anyone who isn't adventurous. It's absolutely not necessary, but I'd do it anyway.
It took me a long time to get into eating Syrian food when I first met H, but it looks like I'm in the minority. Plus, we just went to the restaurant in question for their lunch buffet and it was really good. We will have Syrian food and maybe I'll make a 9x13 dish of Mac n cheese for the kids (there are many) who are pickier.
The only reason I mentioned my white southern neighbors is because this restaurant is the only one in this city that serves this kind of food and it just opened in June, so I know they haven't really been exposed to Syrian food. Good to know most people are totally game to try it.

I didn't read the thread, but in response to the op, I'd be thrilled at authentic, home cooked, ethnic food, as long as there was a vegetarian option! Sounds fun to me!
I eat a lot of lebanese food (because of where I live) and I think as long as there are some of the more 'simple' options, people will find something to eat and like.
This is me too. I love lebanese food. I think because people can eat the meat, rice and bread they will be fine with it. I would label though. That's a great idea!

This sounds awesome. You can help broaden their paletes. Maybe I am an asshole but I love getting my southern friends/neighbors to eat food out of the ordinary. I had my baby shower at a sushi restaurant and my friends thought I was nuts .
So long as it isn't something that requires special skills and/or is messy/likely to stain clothing, it sounds great. I wouldn't serve whole boiled lobsters at such an event either.
I would love Lebanese food at a party! I used to have Lebanese neighbors who invited us to their parties when I was a kid. I remember the food being new and different, but I always loved their parties (they were some of the most open/warm people in the neighborhood). There were also always tame options like pita and rice, which was fine for me, even when I was in a picky eater phase.

I think you are in atlanta - do you really have friends and neighbors who don't eat ethnic foods? This is weird to me. everyone I know eats all kinds of food, even if they were born and raised here.
No, I don't. Close enough for the occasional day trip.
Ah, too bad. If you ever want to try something good, try Mary's Lebanese. There's one on Washington Avenue near Shepherd and another on Richmond near Fountainview in the Galleria area.
I don't remember seeing this on my list of Houston reco's, ahem...

Yep, and family even moreso. Not so say they don't eat any ethnic food but it may just be one or two types they have had in the past. My husband really hadn't had any ethnic food until we dated and I converted him.

I just don't think this is a 'typical' southern thing. I don't know.

I hear ya. I work for a company with lots of people right outside of the Charlotte area and I would be surprised if the majority of them eat much ethnic food. I think it depends on where you are. Overall, yep Atlanta and Charlotte and the big cities are a mix of folks from all over - hence our amazing food options.

Stop trying to ruin the narrative, frlcb. All white southerners are ignorant and xenophobic!
