Texas’s new “campus carry” law won’t take effect until next August, but students are already primed to protest one phallic symbol with another. When the 2016 fall semester begins, University of Texas alumna Jessica Jin wants to see legions of dildos parading across the quad.
The bill, which passed in June, will allow anyone with a concealed handgun license to carry a concealed firearm on any college or university campus in the state of Texas. Institutes of higher education can exercise some discretion in applying the law, including regulating how guns are stored in dorms (because as of next year, guns will be allowed in dorms). But public universities will be prohibited from outright banning firearms on their campuses.
Jin’s response, via Facebook: "You're carrying a gun to class? Yeah well I'm carrying a HUGE DILDO." In an invitation to a “Campus (DILDO) Carry” protest, Jin encourages UT-Austin students to strap “gigantic swinging” fake penises to their backpacks when campus carry takes effect—an act that could earn the carrier a $500 fine for a misdemeanor display of obscene material.
The protest, hashtagged #CocksNotGlocks, plays on the persistent myth of the “good guy with a gun,” a figure gun-rights enthusiasts say is the only thing capable of stopping a bad guy with a gun. Compared to guns, Jin writes, dildos are “just about as effective at protecting us from sociopathic shooters, but much safer for recreational play.”
In Texas, dildo rights have long lagged behind gun rights, and not just when it comes to campus carry. Until 2008, the sale of any sex toy was prohibited in the state. Today, stores can sell dildos to any individual—even felons and those with a history of mental illness—without a background check, although their safe, inert public display is still illegal.
Jin’s planned dildo offensive isn’t the first UT-Austin campus carry protest (one economics professor emeritus has publicly resigned, saying the law has “substantially enhanced” his chance of being shot by an angry student), but it is set to be the largest. More than 4,000 people have responded in the affirmative to the Facebook event, and Jin is confident that she can deliver the necessary goods. “I know that quality dildos, especially super large ones, can be a little pricey,” she writes. “If we can gather enough willing participants, I will personally take it upon myself to put in the time and legwork to find a dildo supplier sponsorship.” May we suggest Nika Cherrelle, maker of the "Trigger Happy" vibrator collection?

I had no idea about the bolded. I guess good thing for online ordering before 2008??? Lol.. And thank heavens I went to college in Georgia where I wouldn't miss a vital part of growing up

It was possible to buy sex toys. They all came with stickers reading "for novelty use only." There were a few things that could not be sold even with the sticker, but you could still buy those if you went into "adult book stores" and asked to see the merchandise. They would card you first.
I can't even comment on the dildo thing. I'm still too shocked that they are allowing guns in dorms. DORMS?! Holy shit no. That is a bad bad idea.
Godspeed to the RAs who have to ask the resident assholes to turn down their music or get rid of the alcohol.
I hadn't heard about this bill before and I am just speechless. I guess I never thought about people trying to bring guns into a college dormitory. Even in Texas I absolutely cannot fathom why people think this is acceptable.
I am not saying this to make light because it is not funny. But someone in DH's fraternity DIED because he and some friends were drunk and jumping up on a balcony railing to see who could spit the farthest. And he was a smart guy, just fooling around drunk. There should be no guns in a dorm. None. I cannot EVEN believe this.

Aside from the fact that this is horrifying, it sounds like a logistical mess when it comes to dorms. Is this going to be on the checklist when it comes to roommate selection? What about suite mates?

I'm sure it would have to be. I gotta believe the liability issue from the university perspective when it comes to things like how they mandate weapons are secured in a dorm (cannot fucking believe I just typed that) b/c that seems to be left up to university discretion.
OMG. Appalled is not the right word for how I am feeling about this. I hope some big donors will start backing out or...something.

This is what stood out to me as well. Just one, drunk idiot playing around with a gun he forgot was loaded and some unsuspecting kid gets shot. I feel like this is almost inevitable.

It is totally a matter of when and how many times I am dumbfounded. I really can't stop thinking about what dumb idea it is (as you can tell by my incessant posting).

Plus the existing problems on college campuses with sexual assault and depression/suicide. Throwing guns into the mix is basically the worst idea ever.

I don't think it is going to happen, or if it does it won't last. Not in the dorms, anyway. Parents will throw a fit, as will students. On campus dorms exist for the very reason that parents want to ease their kids into the real world, hence the rules and such that apartment complexes don't have. I wish I had faith that the rest of the ridiculous new Tx gun laws would be met with such resistance... But I don't see this one as realistic.
Some Texas colleges previously allowed for hunting rifles to be checked in and out for dorm residents. I'm sure something like that may come into play. It says they can't outright ban them but controls are allowed.

This is something I've been wondering about. Date rape is already a huge issue on college campuses, and now women have to worry that their date may use a gun to get what they want?

on the only bright side, I do think taht most of the colleges are opposed to this & most college students are equally horrified and don't want guns....

I love this protest.
And I'm curious to see what restrictions will be placed on guns in the dorms. I can honestly say that I would not live in a dorm that allowed guns, so I hope they understand there will need to be gun-free options. If I were in charge of housing I would put in something along the lines of a $100K charge for a required gun safe rental or something along those lines. It follows the law about not banning guns but would likely prevent 99.99% of students from being able to bring one:
I'll be curious to see if this leads to some amount of brain drain in TX schools. I could see it being difficult to recruit faculty and to recruit out of state and international students if guns are allowed on campus.

1. What good is it to live in a dorm that doesn't allow guns if someone can just bring one from the dorm next door? 2. Any huge restriction like you mentioned is unlikely to pass.
This won't stop until a bunch of kids die. Then MAYBE UT will be able to roll it back.
pamela - I can't believe any schools allowed for hunting rifles. THIS IS NOT OK. Something can be "normal" and still be RECKLESS and ILL CONCEIVED.
Ugh. Must get out of US. 2017...
Even if someone from the next dorm over can bring a gun, when my drunk idiot neighbor accidentally discharges his I won't be on the other side of that wall. Yes, if someone is actively looking to shoot someone a safe dorm won't help, but it would reduce my risk of accidental drunken idiocy. I do agree that my restrictions would be unlikely, they're just IMO the bare minimum required to keep a campus safe. but it's clear that keeping campuses safe is exactly what lawmakers in TX are trying to avoid anywayS
I'm supposed to be going back to school soon. And I'm quite honestly very hesitant to do so knowing that there will be teens and young twenty-somethings walking around armed. No thanks. I'll do online classes before I subject myself to that.
Guns in dorms is disgustingly frightening. It will be interesting to see if there is a sharp decline in out of state applicants (which are so valuable to university budgets.)
You know what a land of adult adolescents who are making their own decisions for the first time, experimenting with drugs/alcohol, showing increasing signs of depression, and live in a culture where being the next outrageous this is celebrated need? Hint: NOT GUNS IN DORMS
s. I thought about trying to get on the list for the Arabic Immersion Elementary School, but they had protestors about "teaching Islam" and "get Qatar out of our schools" on the first day, and it makes me concerned that the school may be a target.
WHY THE FUCK does this have to be a consideration?! I've given up on our country
No. Only Christians are targets. You are fine. (Sarcasm)

All it takes is one good person with a gun....to go completely BSC.

Or they'll see an increase in applications from people who WANT to go to a uni with guns, which is also terrifying.
I'd wager that the vast majority of students, faculty, staff, and admin at UT are against the new law. It's a stupid law. So thanks again, Texas legislature, for wasting everyone's time and making everyone less safe.
First, I think the campus carry law is bullshit, but I think it's important to understand exactly what the law is allowing. I'm sensing some serious hysteria in this thread.
S.B. 11 provides that after consulting with students, staff and faculty regarding "the nature of the student population, specific safety considerations and the uniqueness of the campus environment" the university may enact reasonable rules and regulations regarding: - carrying of concealed handguns by license holders on campus; - and storage of handguns in dormitories or other residential facilities The law stipulates, however, that these rules and regulations may not either "generally prohibit" or "have the effect of generally prohibiting" license holders from carrying concealed handguns on campus.
The law does not allow open carry on campus. The law only allows for people who have a concealed handgun licence to carry their weapon in campus buildings. It is already legal and has been legal for anyone with a CHL to carry their weapon on campus grounds and in public spaces in and around campus.
- A person MUST be 21 years old to get a CHL. - License holders have been allowed to carry concealed on campus (but not in buildings) for the last 20 years. - The law does not affect fraternities, sororities, or other private residential locations. - The law still makes it a crime for a license holder to carry a concealed handgun while intoxicated.
We were talking about UT and this law in my grad class on Thursday night. I was shocked that every single one of my students - in gun loving Alabama - was against open carry on campus.
I would be scared to be a professor on an open carry campus. I am under no illusion that there aren't guns on our closed campus. I'm sure some students are carrying. That makes me nervous. Open carry? No. Just...no.
