I feel like maybe this is less of an issue with boys' clothes? Or else I am very not picky. If it's comfortable and clean, they will probably end up wearing it. If there is something I don't like, it usually hangs out in the bottom of the drawer until we move to the next size up, then it gets donated.
Yeah I'm here. I'm trying to think of something we've gotten that's so ugly that I would want to donate it immediately and I can't think of anything.
Of course the only person who buys us clothes for the boys is my mom and her taste is pretty simple when it comes to kids clothes.
but there are some things I like more than others - the less-liked clothes just go to daycare as backup clothes.
I don't know. Up until now I've only gotten boy stuff from SIL and most of it immediately gets donated. She has so many shirts and stuff with words/slogans, or characters that I just don't like, etc. I prefer much more plain/simple clothes and can't stomach the stuff she hands down. Lol.
Animal print is supposed to look like the skin of the animal. As in you skinned the animal for fashion. I don't think that's right at all. So wearing animal print sends the message that I agree that it's ok to kill and skin animals just for fashion. This is obviously not being done with Carter's $10 shirts but there are animals being killed just for their tusks or fur and that is used in clothing. I, nor my kids, will ever wear animal print as it's something I strongly don't believe in.
Oh.
I'm not sure if this is better or worse than thinking it looks slutty, which is where I thought you were going with that.
You don't have to agree with me, but I am not the only person that doesn't want to perpetuate the belief that killing animals just to use their skin or other body parts in clothing and accessories is ok. Which is what I believe wearing animal print does.

Well I clearly disagree, lol. I also have an unhealthy obsession with leopard print. I've just never heard the argument that animal print fabric perpetuated the belief that its ok to kill animals for fashion.
My mom has one friend that loves to buy dd the super clearance stuff from Kohl's. I will try to return or donate. There is no way I'm putting her in a zebra print trench and matching sweatpants. She looked like baby Cruella DeVille. One time she also got a Juicy Couture velour sweatsuit...lol.
Even without a receipt if I know where it came from I try to return and get store credit so I can buy something else. Otherwise donate. MIL is the queen of ugly clothes and I always tell her to not buy anything. Luckily she isn't one to ask to see them wear a certain outfit so I have no issues getting rid of stuff.

If it's something that's just NMS but not offensive, and will be usable in the current or next season as around the house play clothes, I'll keep a few items to fit that description and donate the rest. If it's offensive (I'm looking at you "pick me up, I dig older chicks" onesie and others along those lines) or something way too big (MIL likes to buy one of everything on the Walmart clearance rack it seems, with total disregard to size) I will donate or throw it in the pile for the next consignment sale. I have zero interest in storing some size 5t ugly stuff for years before it's wearable. Nope. There are plenty of cheap sources for around the house clothes when I need them.
A mother and a MIL with taste that doesn't match ours at all = We give A LOT of children's clothes to charity ;-)

Yeah, I guess it's less of a boy mom thing and more of a personal lack of preference. We're very character friendly around here. I can think of some stuff I wouldn't want (camo print, images of guns, the word "stud") but we've never received anything like that.
I just put it in their drawers. I'm not that picky. My kids choose their own clothes and have since they were really young. They choose really weird outfits. I just can't care about this. free clothes are free clothes.
My god. Yes. My mom always buys some like low quality third party manufacturer Disney print that has rainbow leopard on it. What?!? Seriously, I dress her in Hanna Andersson or Gap or even Old Navy. But really? Hell, even some plain Kohl's stuff is good!
I usually dress her in things I like, or would wear in an adult version. I dress her like a toddler idealized version of what I would wear. Would I wear a rhinestone studded zebra animal print pair of pink pants? I would not!
this is me. but honestly, people tell me that's WHY they buy the stuff they do for A lol. "well, i know you won't let her have this, so i figured i would get it for her. every girl needs this!" *hands over "daddy gave me his credit card" monstrosity. </3
At my baby shower I opened a gift from MIL that she prefaced with, "This looked like your style." It was a darling little outfit and I just loved it and thanked her profusely. Then I opened the rest of her gift, which was 4 more outfits, all neon and sayings and sparkles and crap. I wanted to be like...you know my style! You just proved that! What is this??
Hopefully all the exclaiming over the first outfit will influence her when she buys things for dd in the future...but we'll see.
Nearly all my friends have boys and tell me they are so jealous I have a girl because they are so fun to shop for and there is so much more out there for girls. I keep trying to explain that there isa lot out there, but half of it is super ugly and covered in ruffles, glitter and stupid sayings.
If it's Carters, I'll try to exchange it... But my grandmother buys tons of stuff on mega clearance at Peebles that just isn't worth the effort to return. I'll usually have DD wear the outfit around her once, then it gets donated or sent to daycare as back-up clothes.
If they're new and heinous I let the kids wear them. Because DD probably loves them. And I just don't care. I haven't had this problem with DS yet. Boy clothes are all the same.
If it's a handmedown, I just donate.
If it's new, not my "style" but not ugly and DD doesn't see it, I regift.
I return what I can. If it's not too far out, I'll save things for the next seasonal consignment sales. I actually made like $100 between two sales with all the ugly crap my MIL gave us (including some hand-me-down gear, toys and decor)!
I do have a family member who is famous for giving horrible clothes to my kids. She keeps track of the outfits like a hawk and would get upset when she ouldn't find them in the closet. So with her gifts, I keep them in a closet for a number of months and then get rid of them and use the excuse, "Oh K grew out of that sweater, so I brought it down to the consignment shop."

Donate or exchange but frankly this only happened at my baby shower. Otherwise, the people in DD's life who buy her thing know better. I'm not subtle about things.
I haven't gotten much clothing I don't like as gifts for DS as I did for DD. I am still upset at myself I dressed her in gift outfits her first six months instead of stuff I liked. She got so many clothes I felt silly buying her anything, but I hated so much of it.
My H's aunt works at Ross and used to send DD a big box of clearance stuff that didn't sell. You can imagine the interesting things we got. I mean it was at Ross, so already rejects from somewhere. Then it went on clearance and nobody wanted it? It was some crazy stuff. Like all the offensive (to me) stuff in one outfit. Leopard print velour pants with Sweetie written on the bottom.

My MIL buys the worst clothes ever! I always end up donating it because 90% of the time it comes from Walmart and I HATE.HATE.HATE going there! The walmart brand clothes are always odd fitting too... like short and wide (at least the infant stuff was).
She also buys him collared shirts, he hates them and will just keep ripping at his neck... trash!
I usually stick ugly clothes in the daycare-clothes drawer of his dresser. There are many outfits that he outgrows before I decide to put him in it. I usually stick those in a bin for storage. I have a hard time getting rid of baby clothes. :/
Donate! She has so many clothes that people at least believe she outgrew them before she could wear them.
And I normally don't like animal print and it automatically gets donated. But, this onesie/shoe combo baby A had is still one of my favorites:
*I would like to state for the record that this animal print outfit is not an endorsement for wearing real animal skin.*
DD had a similar combo with a gray shirt and pink animal print pants as a baby and I loved it so much I saved it. It was subtle and cute and made just for babies all the same.
