I used to go as a kid in Phila but that's only bc we had plenty of orchards w/in 30-45 mins of us (Linvilla) but once we moved to CA, nope, not driving a few hrs away to go apple picking.
When it was just xh and I we didn't see the point and we starting hitting pumpkin patches yearly when we had DD. DD has yet to go apple picking but we STILL do the annual pilgrimage to the pumpkin patch

I only know of this because of the Internet. But I didn't grow up some place apples are grown. For reference, we do have two pumpkin patches here.
When we were planning our trip to SoCal, I found a town near San Diego where you can do this. H looked at me like I had three heads when I suggested it as an activity. "Why would we want to pick apples?!" He's from the Midwest.

I'm from WNY and we went picking a lot. Apples, strawberries, blueberries, pumpkins, etc. I actually did it more as a child than I do now with my boys, but I hope to do more as they grow.
I have never gone apple picking at one of those fancy farms. We tried last October with the kids but found out that the farm only allows public picking in the month of Sept. When we got there it was people eating pie and ice cream and buying bulk apples that were already picked. It was a little disappointing to get all the way out there, just to look around and buy a bag of apples.

Growing up in the UK we went strawberry picking but never apple picking. I wouldn't know where there was an orchard near me in the UK.
We also did not have pumpkin patches and I first learned about them in US Weekly.
To be honest, until I had dd, fall was just about the leaves and dressing up slutty for Halloween. Lol. We didn't do trick or treating in the UK when I was little either.

I did it as a kid, Apple Hill (Northern Cali) was about 1.5 hours from us as kids, it is even closer to my house now, but I have never taken C. I enjoyed it when I was a kid, but even the pumpkin patch was a mad house, so I think I will wait until C is older before attempting the pumpkin patch.
We always did it growing up. There is a place near my hometown that makes some amazing apple cider slush, so that was a good enough reason to go. We also always went to pick and chop our own Christmas tree. I also remember apple cider and hot cocoa. Apparently I like the drinks involved in fall activities.

That's where we go. It's is kinda a madhouse with young kids, but I still love it. Probably because it brings back childhood memories too. I want my kids to have the same memories too. And the apple says is so damn good, lol.
I did this every year growing up. I'm from upstate NY and it's how we got our apples every fall. I've already gone 3 times this year. Although, my main motivation is the cider and donuts at the various apple orchards!!
Pumpkin farms, strawberry picking and blueberry picking are also staples that we do every year. We usually do these things with friends of ours and eat lunch at the outdoor cafes that the farms have. Some of them have wine and hard cider tastings.
Tomorrow my daughter's preschool class is going to an apple and pumpkin farm for a hayride and to pick out pumpkins. There will also be cider and donuts at the end. I'm looking forward to it!
I don't know about apples specifically, but I remember going to a lot of "u-pick-em" places for berries, other fruit, pumpkins, etc.
I do think there are a lot of places that have whole, like, theme parks practically, and that seems to be more of a thing than I ever remember - we paid $10/person to go to a pumpkin patch/orchard and go through a corn maze, a petting zoo, giant slides, bouncy shit, a "corn pool" where kids can nearly kill themselves and others by leaping into a giant corn-filled hole and chuck things at each other...all good things, all good things.
