I also noticed she used the phrase "pink elephant", though that seems to be becoming more and more common. Personally an elephant doesn't have to be pink to make itself obvious to me. lol

I'm guessing this was just a case of inadvertent mixing metaphors. "Where there's fuel" doesn't even make sense if you think about it. Just because I have a pile of logs next to my house doesn't mean something's burning.

Pink elephant is an old reference to a drunken hallucination. There's also that whole idea of trying to force yourself not to think of a pink elephant, thus rendering yourself to absolutely think of a pink elephant.

Oh I know (thanks Disney! lol) but the original phrase is "elephant in the room". It's now morphing into "pink elephant", "white elephant" (confusion with the gift exchange perhaps?), "polka dotted" elephant but truly, an elephant in the room is enough. The color is beside the point.

Right. Elephant in the room is a totally different thing.

I should have been more clear in my original post. The phrase used in Luvvie's piece was "sweep the giant pink elephant in the room under the rug", hence my mention of it.

Lol there's like 3 different phrases mixed in there!
