I am sitting on my hands to refrain from telling someone on a friend's FB page his unconscious sexism won't do his daughter any favors. I don't want to start a battle on my friend's page. My comment about ingrained societal requirements went completely over his head. I'm stepping away.
I got new glasses today (thank you smash and grab purse stealers) and they're progressive. It's the first time I've had them. It's like learning to walk again. I've tripped twice and let's not even talk about the stairs.

We're camping at a state park that is not nearly far enough from the city. We can hear constant roar of traffic and it never got dark enough to really need a flashlight once your eyes adjusted. But the weather is beautiful and DS actually took a nap in the tent so he should be tolerable tonight.
Over the course of H's webcam conversation with MIL today I learned that:
A: MIL has no idea what H's specialty is. None. She thought he should start delivering babies after he gets out of the Army, and he had to gently remind her that he's an internist. "Oh really? I didn't know that!" Yeah, he graduated from medical school almost a decade ago and hasn't changed his specialty since.
B: MIL is AGHAST that he isn't going to have benefits once he gets out of the Army in a few years. "I just thought that with how long you've been in that they'd give you something!" I had to jump in at that point and remind her that they did pay for both college and medical school, plus all of our family's medical expenses. I'd call that "something."
C: MIL had NO IDEA that H could deploy again. This is the same woman who said, "I didn't think they could do that!" the first time he deployed.
D: MIL is a little fuzzy on geography. "I've never had the desire to travel outside of the United States. I only ever took you kids to Mexico and Canada on vacation."
And this is why H only speaks to his mother once a month.
MIL is really the nicest, sweetest woman, and she ADORES me and my kids, but she is also absolutely bananas. I think the last straw for H was when he was 14 and she decided not to tell him that she and his stepdad were getting divorced. His adult sister had to be the one who broke the news, because MIL was clearly never going to bring it up with him. Then she got remarried when he was 16 (to a man who was in prison at the time) and never told any of her kids about the marriage. They figured it out when she changed her name a few years later shortly before he was released and moved into her house.
She is so incredibly weird. So weird. I tell these stories to people who have met her briefly, and they're just aghast because she looks and acts like a normal person in day-to-day life.

It's finally cool enough to feel like fall (currently 74 at almost 6pm). I made cookies and tomorrow we're going to roast dinner and have a fire.
What kind of cookies? I may or may not be looking for some inspiration.
Just sugar cookies. I have a fall cookie cutter set. The Martha Stewart recipe makes a crapload, which is a huge project for icing (and also a workout for my stand mixer), so I cut it in half and then just used sanding sugar on half of that, so we only have 1/4 the original recipe to ice tomorrow, which is "fun" and not "work".
But I think I have a couple other fall cookies I like, let me take a look.

I saw this today, and thought of this board, because you have very strong opinions on both spiders and toilet paper. But I'm not sure it makes any sense. Couldn't the spider hide easier with the flap over the top? Or is it saying this is the proper way?

Last year I learned how to replace the drum belt in the dryer. Now the heating element is dead and I'll be replacing that. Still less than a new dryer!

Yes, the spider could hide either way, but if the TP were installed correctly (opposite to this pic) then when you started to pull it would be flung away from you instead of into your lap.
