Worth getting a legit dress-up storage thing or is a giant box going to achieve the same thing? My thought is if all the stuff is hanging, maybe the dress-up stuff will get more play, but then I wonder will it every be neat and organized anyway or is it all going to end up in a pile at the bottom anyway?

I use an old coat rack that I spray painted and drilled extra hooks onto the post. It's great and takes up almost no space. I wanted a nicer system but our playroom is already overstuffed and cannot hold more furniture. Plus this was free since I found the coat rack on garbage day and used supplies I had.
We use a plastic storage container. In theory the hang up idea is awesome but it wouldn't work for us. Do your kids hang up clothes, jackets, etc? My kids fling everything on the floor.
I hung a tension rod in our playroom and used regular hangers to hang dress up stuff. we have a tote underneath for smaller accessories. It's also where 50% of the clothes end up.
Its nice and handy and fun....but I'm glad I didn't spend money on it.

I just bought This garment rack from Amazon. Adjustable height, $15, perfect. Right now her stuff just ends up on the floor but it kills me a little to spend the money on princess dresses from disney and have them just thrown on the floor or in a box. I'll put it next to her mirror. She's getting a new toy room for Christmas because hers is in an extra bedroom right now and she needs more space, so this is part of that.

We had a big dress up chest for a while, but that got quickly outgrown and all the things had to be emptied to find the one very specific item they were looking for. So we switched to a lowered clothing rack with clothes hung on hangers. That was great for seeing and getting what they wanted, but awful for cleaning up. And somehow everything still ended up on the floor, with the addition of hangers. Now we have this set up, and it's working really well.
I bought the clothes clippy thing at Ikea. It has eight arms, sixteen clips, and rotates to get to everything. The two big bins hold all the random stuff and whatever they don't want to/can't clip back up. They have two doctor kits that I merged into the one case and it sits in one of the cubbies. 3M hooks up above hold hats. So far so good. DS has a little trouble clipping things back up, but it's definitely easier than hangers and it has been staying a lot neater than any of our other systems.
