DS was all excited about the potty for a few weeks this summer. When his excitement waned, I didn't push the subject. He was still having trouble pulling his pants up / down, and wouldn't sit on the real toilet, just the plastic one. So it really seemed like a hassle and more work than diapers. LOL. He also did not poop on the little potty, so I was hoping to wait until he was a bit more ready.
Fast forward to yesterday, and he comes up to me saying "mama, I have to poop!" He usually tells me after the fact, so I asked if he wanted to use the potty, and was shocked to hear a "yes" with some serious head shaking. We raced in, and on the way he said "uhhhh, I'm pooping". Bummer. We didn't make it in time. But I still sat him down and made a big deal about it.
He keeps asking to use the potty, and today he started using the regular toilet. Finally! Man I hate dumping out the plastic potty.
Anyway, when he sits on the toilet, even when he is sitting back pretty far, he often pees out over the edge. And if I ask him to use his finger to point his penis down, he can't keep his balance on the toilet. He needs to hold himself up there with 2 hands. (I think he's still nervous about the height and falling in, so even if he can balance, he won't do it unless both hands are holding onto the seat.) Any tips? DH tried getting him to lean forward, but then he feels like he's going to fall in.
We had this problem from time to time on the plastic potty, but usually that lip in the front held back the spray.
He also seems better about letting me know when he wants to pee vs. poop, and alerts us to poop when it's too late. Too imminent. Is there a way I can help him with this? He seems pretty down on himself when he doesn't make it to the toilet in time to poop, and as he's showing more readiness this time around I want the experience to be positive, not upsetting.

My son had the same problem (scared to fall in) I had him put his two hands in front of him on the potty so he was leaning forward to make his penis point down.
Are you using a training seat on the toilet? We let DS pick one out and he was excited about using it. He didn't have to hold himself up because the hole was smaller, and it did come with a guard for boys that mostly kept him from spraying out. He only used the seat for about a month and now can balance himself on it without any help

Is there a potty seat on the regular toilet? They make ones with the lip on front that might help. Otherwise, I would have him sit back, spread his legs way apart and put his hands on the front center of the seat to balance. It forces him to lean forward which helps with aim.
It sounds like you are doing the right thing. Just stay positive and encouraging.
Also, one of my aunts works at a daycare and they teach the boys to use the toilet backwards. Not sure I would want to do that, but it is an option if all else fails
We did the "3 day" method and went straight to underwear last Saturday so we are a week in. He did really well with letting us know if he had to pee but he had two poop accidents at school last week and two at home this weekend. We have two potty rings but I just ordered another one of these because it keeps the pee in better:
We also have a potty chair but I hate it because pee gets on the floor.
So my advice is to go straight to underwear and commit yourself to just not leaving the house for a few days and he will catch on. Praise and stickers help too.
Tomorrow we have big plans to be out of the house for a santa train thing, so I can't do underwear tomorrow. But I guess I could make the commitment starting Monday. I'm not sure if I should push him, though?
ETA: I did have him in pants without a diaper for a few hours this morning until we went to the gym and he didn't seem upset. But he did have one accident.

After he got the hang of sitting on the little plastic potty to pee, we taught him to stand and pee at the regular toilet. He is just barely tall enough, but he can do it. We have a potty ring for pooping, but so far he is still pooping in his nap time pull up or overnight diaper.
We also had the Baby Bjorn potty ring and it was a life saver. We have a girl, but boys used it and their parents went out and bought them. I have two to sell now that DD doesn't need them. lol

Our rings have a splash guard, and we have a step stool. Daycare taught them to pull the shirt up too, although he stands there.
I would skip underwear tomorrow and do a pull up. When I needed them early on, I called them special learning underwear, and DS did not have an accident in them.
I would start Monday, although frankly, I had no qualms about pushing/leading DS to use the potty, despite his total lack of interest.

Ugh, the shirt has been a problem today, too. I just moved him into 2T even though it's a little big, and it hangs down too much into his lap.
This built in ring had been one of our best kid purchases! Highly recommend as I think it's sturdier and cleaner than a standalone ring and it gives him more independence (once he is ready).

DD pees straight out of the potty so much!! It's such a pain. I told her to put her elbows on her knees and that helps. Sometimes she puts her nose on her knees - that's pretty funny.
