A customer pulled out a gun and shot and killed an employee at a Waffle House restaurant in Mississippi on Friday after she asked him not to smoke, police said.
Police received a call about the shooting at 1:11 a.m., said Biloxi police Sgt. Donnie Dobbs. The customer, Johnny Max Mount, had argued with an employee after being told that he could not smoke, Dobbs said.
"He pulled out a handgun and shot her in the head," Dobbs said.
The woman died on the way to the hospital, he said.
The suspect was outside the restaurant when police arrived and surrendered without incident.
He's been charged with first- degree murder and is being held on $2 million bond at the Harrison County Adult Detention Center, police said.
The victim's name has not been released as authorities try to locate her next of kin. The Sun Herald newspaper reported that Mount was 45 and lived in Biloxi, Miss.
The Waffle House restaurant in Biloxi has a nonsmoking policy, said Kelly Thrasher-Bruner, a spokeswoman for Waffle House, Inc.
"This senseless tragedy is a shock for the Waffle House family. Our associate was a friend to many as well as a valued member of the Waffle House team for eight years as a salesperson. She will be greatly missed. Our prayers are with her family, friends, co-workers and customers," Thrasher-Bruner said.
This is what I mean when I talk about how easy availability of guns makes ordinary conflicts and disputes escalate quickly and easily to deadly situations. Could he have used a knife or something else? Maybe. Or maybe not. It's a hell of a lot easier to pull a trigger than to shove a knife into someone's chest, both physically and psychologically. And pulling a trigger is so fast. There is no time to think or change your mind. The bullet is gone, no second chances.

Not to mention it's a lot harder to actually kill a person with a knife. It takes a whole lot of luck and strength to hit places that are going to kill someone, and even then at times if the person receives prompt medical attention they can be saved. A bullet wound to the head however while a hard shot, is relatively easy, requires no strength, and death is pretty instantaneous.

Here's what I never understand about this. How did Johnny Max (wtf to that name) make it to age 45 in a society without doing anything to land himself in jail already? Like how is it that being asked not to smoke is what sent him straight from generally law abiding free citizen to murder in like 2 seconds?

Same thinking here. Did he wake up & think, "I'm gonna kill the next person who pisses me off"?!? I'm SO disgusted by this story, & grossed out that I live in a country that isn't gonna do anything about it. Because $$$

Apparently he suffered a traumatic brain injury a few years ago:
Well, I can see how brain injury could affect a person's resppnse, but he was injured in 2002? 13 years to snap? And does that mean TBI would become a reason to restrict gun access (lol, I know, but think of all of the vets with this issue).

All of what TTT said. We're not even trying to do better. That's my thing. We're not even trying. And in the meantime we've got a bunch of nutters running for President that will take that ball and run it way back deep into "everyone gets a gun and no, we're not doing ish about mental health" territory.

That man is definitely someone who should not have had access to a gun. My guess is that his brain injury made him prone to being impulsive and took away some of the frontal lobe functioning - so making his decision making process and connections to emotions a bit too tangled. But no, let's give everyone guns. Poor woman and her family.
