The local bookstore recommended it for L. Anyway, it's AWESOME. I adore it. It's a graphic novelization of the author's childhood.
So, it's SO good that I tried to sneak it out of L's room so I could finish it tonight and she CAUGHT me and made me put it back on her nightstand. She was so irritated with me. "ONLY TOGETHER or you'll already know what happens."
LOL. Anyway, if you're looking for a good book as a present for a kid aged around 5/6 to about I'd say 10, I highly recommend it.
Yes! My 4th grader was on the fence for doing the Reading Olympics (ok, not on the fence, he really didn't want to do it) and I told him if he did it then I would read all of the books he did and we could talk about them.
The first book he picked was El Deafo, he was so proud when he came home and told me it was the only graphic novel for the Reading Olympics and that's why he picked it. Anyway, it was awesome. We both really enjoyed it and it was pretty damn cool having conversations about books and how they translated into "real life" for him.
I would recommend it for everyone, without a doubt.
My DD just read it 4 times over Thanksgiving break. We drove from Chicago to Florida so she had lots of time lol. She LOVES it and read a bit of it to e while we were driving. Now I want to read the whole thing

I will add this to the reading list. The miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane was the same for DD and I. We blew through it in a week.
That book makes me sob like no other. Just reading the preface does me in completely.
I know. XH read it one night when I was out of town. I came home and he was all "WHY did you read this with her? *starts to get weepy* Sarah Ruth? Holy SHIT.". It's just such a beautiful story.
