I know people here have had them before. I had mine checked out, and no need for any care aside from prophylactic antibiotic drops, but did you find anything that made it hurt any freaking less in the meantime? My dr asked me if I'd been using any eye drops, and I said I hadn't because I wasn't sure if that would make something worse. He just said "that's understandable" and went on with asking me questions about pain level etc., but I forgot to ask if there WERE drops that would help, and what kind? The last thing I want is to make this freaking worse. lol
They didn't give you numbing drops? This happens to DH at least once a year and he always gets two drops, one to heal and one to numb.
Also, laying in a dark room with eyes closed and an ice pack on your affected eye always helps DH, sometimes I've he's super sensitive we just a cold wet washcloth over his closed eye.
No magical numbing drops. *pout* Thanks for the tips. It's bright as hell in my office which is not helping. I was considering using a bandaid to tape it closed. lol
Yeah, it hurts. Thank God it's been a long time since I had one!
The mutt just recently had a corneal abrasion and the eye drops that they gave him (2 sets), one was an antibiotic and the other was something to help the eye repair. He hated the antibiotic but the repair one he tolerated better, so am guessing that it had something soothing in it to make his eye feel better.

I scratched my cornea in September and I was in so much pain I called my gp in the middle of the night begging her to call me in a prescription for the numbing drops. She said they were too dangerous to use at home. The next day,the eye dr gave me what he called a "bandage" contact lens. It stops the eyelid from touching the eyeball, reducing irritation. It helped tremendously. I used the anitibiotic drops 4 times a day while I wore it.

Yeah, last night was really bad. I actually considered walking the 3mi to a 24/7 urgent care. lol
I'm sorry . When I had a scratched cornea, the doc prescribed an antibiotic ointment and recommended Systane Ultra lubricating eyedrops. I used the Systane as needed and it helped to soothe it. I hope you feel better very soon!

Once when DH s was really bad, his eye was scratched by metal, they out numbing goo in it, then covered it in gauze and an eye patch to keep it closed. The problem with light is it makes your eye water more then you blink more irritating it more and more each time.
GOOD GOD. Mine was just a toddler finger and I'm whining like it's fatal.

I actually cried when she said no. Eye pain sucks. Hope you find relief soon.
FastHands If you decide to use a supplemental drop, I'd run it by the doctor first just in case. I had to take the antibiotic 3 times a day and was told not to take the lubricating drop within 15 minutes of the antibiotic so that it didn't wash it out.

The ER doctor told me the same thing. It was a long time ago but iirc they numbed my eye (at 3 am when I woke up in excruciating pain and went in) with drops but then had to rinse them out before they'd let me go home. I cried. Nothing helped the pain, sorry OP, except absolutely resting - not even walking around - with both eyes closed. Hopefully treatment options have improved in 18+ years (my 19yo was a baby when his nail scratched my cornea.)

What is wrong with these children? I GAVE YOU LIFE!
Also, I just picked up my abx rx, and it's ointment. Hopefully that will feel nice, but I'm heebyjeebering about putting it on.

Did they tell you how to do it? Mine was an ointment once and you put a thin line on your finger and scrape it into your eye on your lower lid, and blink. The blinking will spread the ointment up onto your cornea. Honestly, it's not bad.

Ugh, corneal abrasions suck. My sympathies. I didn't get any numbing drops and unfortunately had a reaction to the prescribed drops that made my eye swell shut. Hopefully you won't encounter this!

I just googled, because no, they did not tell me how. lol. Thank you, though! I just put it on and it wasn't as bad as I was fearing. I was envisioning having to rub my eyeball down. lol
I had one a few years back and it was awful - my sympathies. I was told to lay in a dark room and not use my eye. My eye doctor said he would prescribe ambien if I couldn't make myself do that without being asleep. I spent 2 days in bed listening to audiobooks and podcasts.
I hope the abx helps soon. On the plus side, it should heal quickly.
I've had shallow ones for years and they just won't heal. I have chronic dry eye. I can't wear contacts any more because of it. I had tear duct plugs put in but they recently came out so I need to go back in.
I agree with the above poster that suggested Systane. Make sure you get either the "lubricating" eye drops or the eye "gel" (not the night time thick gel that looks like neosporin). It's not cheap (about $13-15 a bottle) but I have 3-4 bottles around me at all times. Make sure you are putting in drops at least once an hour, if not every 30 minutes. Drink lots of water and take some sort of fish oil/omega 3/6 supplement.
