Right?! It sounds wonderfully convenient for a lot of things, but they can't overcome the weirdness factor for me. I said something to a CW (who had seen one at a family member's house and now wants one) about how I don't like that it's always listening, and her response was, "well it doesn't listen until you say 'Alexa.'" ... ... Aaaaand it would know you said "Alexa," how?
Alexa turns on and off my lights, plays music, and gives me weather info
Can you tell me more about this? I have to buy compatible parts right? Like a plug in thing? You don't need special bulbs do you? I got overwhelmed when I clicked on that part.
It is super duper dark when I come home with the kids and usually my hands are full with school crap. Would love to use this feature but not if it's going to cost $50 to set up.
We use Hue bulbs and DH set it up, so I have no idea what actually goes into it. I'll ask him though!!

Yes, you have to have compatible parts. You can get the wifi enabled bulbs, but you will also need a hub to go with those (The bulbs link to the hub which links to the Echo). You can just buy a wifi enabled plug. Most of those don't need a hub. You could also get a wifi enabled lightswitch
We have 2 bulbs and a plug set up now. The plug is nice for things like table lamps or Christmas trees. We have the bulbs in ceiling lights that just require a single bulb. We are thinking about getting a switch for some of the lights that have multiple bulbs in it because one switch would be cheaper than 4 or 5 bulbs.
They are all very easy to move around when you get them all set up. The set up wasn't terrible. It took me maybe 45 minutes all together. Each additional one we have added only took 5-10 minutes at most.
I bought one for DH for Father's Day... Really a gift for me too! We love our Echo. The shopping list is great. There is an app I put on my phone so I can check stuff off the list at the grocery store as I shop. It is one of those great devices that I never knew I needed.
