I stopped the pill and we officially started trying in early March 2015. My annual is scheduled for that same time this coming year. (It was last year too, so doc knows I stopped the pill and we've been trying since then.)
If I don't get pregnant before then, I'd like to look in to starting the process of getting help. Do I need to call and schedule this or give them a heads up, since I'm only scheduled for an annual right now? Or should I wait and just talk to the doc at my appointment? I know a lot of women recommend seeing an RE but I figured I'd start with my doc, since I like her and trust her opinion. Figured maybe she would run some basic screenings.
Anyone have advice? I know it's still a few months out but I don't want to wait until the last minute, because it can be a little hard to get appointments on short notice. Plus, I'm a little stressed about the fact that we might be in a situation we need help. I really never thought we'd take this long for it to happen, and I've been having a lot of trouble coping with it the stress of it lately. I'm a worrier by nature, and it's starting to really screw with my head that something is wrong.
I'm sorry that you're having a rough time. It sounds really stressful.
I would start calling now. Depending on your age, and how seriously you've been trying (i.e.: charting, temping, OPKs, etc), many doctors start the process at 6 months instead of a year. At least, if you call, you'll know where your doctor stands on it (if she wants to wait a few more months or get the ball rolling now). Your doctor may or may not really know anything about fertility or about getting pregnant. It seems to me that unless doctors have had personal experience with fertility issues, most don't really know what's going on in there, and may not even know which tests to run. YMMV though, but it doesn't hurt to start with your PCM and see what she says. I would want to know what her plan is, but wouldn't hesitate to ask for a referral to an RE (either now or in a few months).
I went off BC in September of last year and brought it up with my OB-GYN in October at my annual. She asked a bunch of questions about my tracking/charting and things about my cycle. She asked if I wanted a recommendation to the RE, and I said I did. Since then, I've met with the RE, gone over my insurance, and gone through the basic testing. I'm glad I'm moving in this direction.
It took me about 3 weeks to get the initial appointment with the RE, though my H was able to get the SA appointment very quickly.
Thanks ladies. I just turned 31, and though I don't chart, we've done just about everything else. I'm guessing she'll want to do done basic screenings and will hopefully refer me to someone awesome.
I know it varies place to place, but do I need to talk to the doc specifically or do I just need to tell the receptionist I'd like to alter my appointment (Or make an additional)?
I'm so glad I have a place to ask these questions and get some support. Though it sucks that so many of us have some trouble, and I agree that I don't wish this on anyone, it does help some knowing I'm not alone.
I would keep it make your annual appointment and then cancel it when you need to. Is there a particular reason you aren't charting? I'm only asking as it gives just about the best idea of if you are ovulating or not. You can get positive opks without actually ovulating. I'm just curious. And hugs about having a rough week. TTC makes everything more emotional I feel!

Sorry if I'm unloading. I've had a rough week. :/
((hugs)) - we started TTC #2 in March 2015 too, we're on our 10th cycle and it looks like another bust. We started initial fertility testing w/my OBGYN about 4 weeks ago. I've been charting and we're timing everything perfectly, so I wanted to see if something was amiss. My tests were fine, DH's SA was almost completely fine. I feel better knowing we were not spinning our wheels trying while there was an obvious issue (e.g., blocked tubes).
If I were you I would schedule an appointment before your annual. It takes time to schedule the fertility tests - DH's SA wait time was like 6-8 weeks (!). I'd ben pretty anxious if we hit 12 months and had to wait even longer for tests.
Hugs to you. I just had my yearly appointment with my OB and have also hit the year mark of TTC this month. I discussed it with my OB at my appointment and he has referred me to an RE. I just made the appointment for my consult for next month. My OB didn't order any tests or anything like that. I'm new to this so not sure if this is typical or not.
it seems like a lot of OBs will do some basic stuff for you, but most girls who have been TTTC for a while tend to recommend just going straight to the RE. Good luck with your consult next month!
