My old gyn didnt want to give me one because I had never had kids and she was worried my uterus wouldnt hold it, but my new doctor thinks my uterus is just fine and I am a good candidate for it. She said that she has never seen anyone have a uterus too small to hold it. I bet the doctors office just wanted you to have a consult bc there can be more pain with the insertion. But good luck, I hope you can get it! I plan on making an appt to get one too.
At a recent follow up with my neurologist, he told me that I could get the Mirena IUD if I wanted, because it was progesterone only, and low progesterone at that.
I envy you! My neurologist gave a no on any hormones whatsoever with my migraines.
My normal doc nixed the idea (family practice, did gyn things too) so I went to planned parenthood (this was for a copper IUD)- they consulted with me, but not in a special separate appointment. They made insertion appointments long enough to sit down and discuss risks etc of it with no prior pregnancies and to talk about how you have to be in a long term monogomous relationship or use condoms 100% of the time or else (insert scary STD/bacterial infection making you sterile story here).
The checkup will probably be fine - they may just want to run some STD/bacterial infection tests first (inserting during a yeast infection/STD/other infections is a major no-no) and discuss possible expulsion/risks with you.

Lolzala, he initially told me the same, but when I asked about Mirena he looked it up and said it would be ok. But I am also on daily aspirin and propranalol as preventatives, so combined with the very low dose of progesterone he felt it would be ok.
Well, lemme tell you, from what I've heard minera is a joy in comparison to my paraguard experience. Everytime I see the gyno and they hear about bad cramping/super heavy periods they go 'why don't we switch you to the minera, that helps with all that' :-( I also have migraine with aura so that plus certain BC hormones can apparently equal increased risk of stroke - and I thing progesterone is included in that because they wouldn't even let me switch to progesterone only pills like the minipill.

Like pps said, it's probably just that you'll need an exam to ensure you're a good candidate.
For various reasons I was pretty limited in my bc options so tried Mirena (never had kids). They tried for a fucking hour to insert the damn thing. Multiple doctors, brought in an U/S machine to help guide, etc. It was freaking awful. Like hurt so bad I was getting butt sweats.
Had I had a proper exam prior to trying a Mirena insert they would have discovered that I wasn't a good fit and I would have skipped straight to other options.
