Um... I have a few more issues with his comments, especially his decision to compare selling a movie franchise to "white slavers" (aka Disney). I'm no huge fan of Disney because they hate whole families, but that seems a bit excessive.
And he has NO room to talk, after he went in and "Lucased" episodes 4-6. #HandidNOTshootGreedoinselfdefense
Sorry, there's just too much hinting around at a connection with the other characters for her not to be related.
I came out of the theater thinking they must have thought it was too obvious that she was Han and Leia's daughter so they didn't need to say it out loud. I could totally be wrong on that, but they wouldn't leave all these hints without it meaning something.
He can whine all he wants. He can't hurt my beloved franchise anymore.
H and I actually use the term to "Lucas" something for when you work too long on something and it all starts going incredibly downhill.
"I was working on putting that bookcase together, but after I got so frustrated with directions I just went and Lucased it all up."
YES! Me too! Whenever I or someone I know is tempted to go back yet again to something that is just fine the way it is, I say, "Let's not Lucas that project."
I'm waiting in line just to get into the theater. What the heck? This movie has been out for what - two weeks? We went to one theater and it was already sold out.

I am not surprised. EVERYONE is going to see this. My dad has seen like 5 movies in the theater since he's been my father (so 34 years lol). Planet of the Apes with Mark Wahlberg, Gladiator, Fellowship of the Ring, Return of the King, and my mom made him see Zero Dark Thirty with her. But he went willingly to see this one.
Plus repeat viewers - a friend of mine has seen it three times. He plans to go a few more times.
Factor in that its NYE so a huge movie going night in general, and some people probably thought to miss the crowds and go early - it makes sense.
I mean I get your annoyance, lol, but I'm not surprised.
I honestly didn't know NYE was a movie going holiday. My H and I didn't think it would be his busy. Not annoyed really, just surprised.
The pre movie commercials are super downers though. I need a drink or something haha.
Dh and I saw it 2 days ago and I loved it! We're not raging Star Wars fans (in fact, I had to remind Dh what happened at the end of Return of the Jedi), but I thought it fit the original 3 movies very well.
I think they want us to think Rey is Luke's daughter, but I'm not sure if that's deliberate misdirection or just blatant foreshadowing. The strong connection to the light saber and her memories of the ocean are to telling.
I think it's going to end up that Han had a hand in leaving her there. The fact that he had such a guilty look on his face when she talked about the greenery, and the fact that he's dead are telling to me. If she finds out Leia or Luke were responsible, she'd have to work to forgive them in order to move on and work with them.
With Han, she was already feeling a strong connection to him, so from a storytelling standpoint, the betrayal is much worse. Plus, her personal feelings won't detract too much from the rest of the story--she can be angry at his memory while still moving the plot forward.

New Years Eve is definitely a moviegoing holiday, one of those days where you really have to go early, especially if you want to see a popular movie. DH and I went 45 minutes early to see Imitation Game last year. We were fifth in line, and the theater was almost sold out. We're not even in a major city.
We also saw Joy the day after Christmas. The whole parking lot of the theater was filled, but we weren't worried because we knew it wasn't for the movie we were seeing.
We'll probably get to Big Short 45 minutes early today, too.

There's a big debate going on as to whether Star Wars: The Force Awakens will break in to best picture. If it does and Mad Max and The Martian also get in as predicted, it will be the first time that three films that are sci-fi (or kinda sci-fi) get in.
Some people are saying that it deserves to get in based on box office alone, then there are those who don't want to see the smaller arthouse movies squeezed out. ex: "Brooklyn"

I guess I'm the only one in this thread who was a little disappointed? I thought it was well executed and directed, but that the script was too derivative of the episode 4. There were no unexpected plot twists, no expansion of the worldbuilding. Maybe on a repeat viewing these things would bother me less. I have high hopes for the next two, though.

Upon my 3rd viewing (lol), I noticed a lot of different looks toward her from Han. Like when they find her towards the end and she's climbing on that wall, he gives her a look like he is proud of her.

I've seen it 4 times and it is still selling out theaters here. Luckily we have a few theaters with reserved seating so there is none of this waiting in line foolishness.
We saw it for the third time today, and I'm even more firmly convinced that Rey is a Skywalker. The music alone gives it away--Luke's theme plays when she uses the Force with the lightsaber for the first time.
Kylo Ren definitely seems to know, and almost love or be extremely intrigued with, Rey. On the second watching I noticed it even more. I saw no signs at least in the acting that Leia knew Rey. Han was a little more vague. He definitely was a fan and he offered her a job after knowing her barely but...hard to say. He was way more into saving his son than getting Rey back or being supremely worried about her when he saw Kylo carry her off. Which perhaps leads us back to my first thought which is that somehow they knew Ben loved her as a kid, either in a familial or other way.
After repeated viewings it is very obvious that Kylo knows Rey; he treats her with caution and caring that he does not extend to anyone else. He doesn't harm her during their interaction on Takodana and he knocks her unconscious and carries her aboard his ship. Even when she is his "guest" on Starkiller base he makes no attempt to physically hurt her. The final battle scene with Rey and Finn even has Kylo flinging her into a tree to take her out of the battle. When they are fighting and the chasm opens up behind Rey he pleads with her to join him even though he has the opportunity to push her off the ledge.
As for other random observations (aside from Kylos magic scarf) his voice changes based on who he is speaking with and what he is saying. I thought it was just a random thing at first but I've paid attention to it the past 2 times I've seen the movie and I'm pretty sure its intentional and has something to do with the battle between the light and the dark side within him.
We finally saw this tonight. I think Han knows something about how Rey was abandoned, dh and I have been debating what the connection could be since the movie ended 3 hours ago.
I noticed the change in Kylo's voice too, I agree with the theory that it has something to do with his conflicted feelings between the two sides. I'm not sure if he knows Rey though or just can tell there's something special about her.
And I like the theory that R2D2 woke up because of the change in the force. That makes sense. And I totally didn't think about Leia feeling that change, I was thinking she could just feel that something had happened to Han. Although that makes me wonder if maybe Luke felt the change because he seemed to be waiting for someone to come find him and his resolving to that and setting his mind on being found woke up R2D2.
But I loved this movie. I thought it was amazing. I'd never seen a Star Wars movie until about a year and a half ago when dh made me watch them all, so this was my first time seeing one on the big screen.
OK. I've now seen it three times. (Yes, I'm that person.)
I watched Han and Leia closely in any interactions they had regarding Rey. I'm convinced they're not her parents, unless they are but really have no clue they are. But even then, the moment Han sees Ren carrying Rey aboard the ship, his sole focus is Ren, not Rey. He tells Leia, "He was here, Leia. Our son was here." Nothing about, "Oh, and he was carrying our daughter."
Conversely, Finn's only focus is Rey. He runs after the ship screaming her name, and after they take off, his sole focus is getting Rey back. (In fact, you can see the juxtaposition between Han's guilt not letting him chase after his son, and Finn's panic at losing Rey in chasing after a ship which could blow him to bits as it departs.)
Then, as Finn garners Poe's help to try to get to Rey, he is brought to Leia. Leia's #1 focus is any information Finn has to help them destroy the Starkiller; she only refers to Rey as "your friend."
In rewatching the hug Leia and Rey share later, consider two aspects: Rey was the last one to see Han alive, and Leia just lost that man, so they're sharing that loss. But they're also each sharing their respective losses, because Rey thinks she just lost Finn.
I'm really curious to see how the story progresses with Luke; the look on his face at the last scene shows all the things: "Fuck, it's apparently time." / "I've felt it, my student has turned to the Dark Side." / "Han, my old friend, is dead." / "Please help me not fuck this up."
OOOOH, and I want to see more about how or what Ren knows about Vader. He says, "Show me again" to the mask, so somehow I feel like he's seen or felt something from Vader before as to the Dark Side. If that theory that Snoke is the Sith Lord who knows how to bring people back (the one Palpatine talks about in Ep.III), it'd be interesting to see if he was able to show or deceive Ren into believing Vader desires a path to the Dark Side for him.

I predicted many months ago that it would take the #1 spot. I love Cameron. I love both Titanic and Avatar and was happy Avatar has held the title since its release in '09, but I just knew TFA would out gross it, which makes me happy because it is fantastic. So much love for Abrams' and Kennedy's vision and what they've done with the Star Wars saga.

You know, I was just lamenting the fact that my husband doesn't care for the movie much, so I would most likely not get to see it again in the movies... But then I realized he's got band stuff on Saturday, so I can go without him! Hooray!
Lurker here. I have a dumb question that even my super fan bil can't answer and it's bothering me. Why is Kylo Ren dressed like a low budget Darth Vader? I thought Vader only wore the mask because he had breathing issues. Han even yells at Ren to take off the mask, saying "You don't need it" So, what's up with that? Is the cape and voice distortion mask like the uniform for his particular "rank" of evilness? Or darkness? Lol

In the flashback scene all of the Knights of Ren wear masks. It is also a way for Kylo to no longer be Ben Solo; the mask and the outfit allow him to shed his old persona and become someone new.

But, but, he's not becoming someone new. He's an exact replica of Vader. So I guess he's just shamelessly trying to replace Vader, outfit, voice distortion and all. I must say this disappoints me. Seems like a lazy way to keep the vader character alive. Kinda corny actually. (Ducks flames)

He's not becoming someone new as in a new character, but rather from his character's standpoint, he's denying who he was born as and is creating a different self--one modeled after his grandfather, who he seems to idolize.

Yes it's an homage to his hero Vader but it also allows him to be massively intimidating - both when he leaves and goes out into the fields or what have you and on the ship with the storm troopers and others on board. As Ben he's not that intimidating and he's still Ben Solo, but when you put the whole thing on he's a powerful man and everyone around him knows that. Rey calls him on it pretty much.
