I just rematches the Mary being a supreme bitch scene, and was interested to see that Robert abandoned Tom and Bertie to the cats, while Mary sent Carson away. Would she have been such bitch if both of her father figures were still on the room?
I wondered the same. I don't think she would have been. She may have said something regardless, but not quite to that level.
All season I've been waiting for you to watch this scene. Does mr pamuk justify this heinous action? Nope. It was beyond cruel and spiteful for NO reason other than she was jealousE of Edith.
Not to mention, that it is one thing to do something thoughtless or even vindictive at 18, but quite another to do it at 30+. By then, you know very well the cost.
@foodielicious , let's not pretend that Edith would act any differently toward Mary right now, though.
I have to agree with @foodielicious and disagree with sfy here. I don't think Edith would act that way toward Mary at this point, and I think that's confirmed by her incredibly generous burying of the hatchet as Mary readied for her wedding. I don't think Mary deserved that and I can't say I'd have been as gracious.
womet, I know. I should still be mad. I would probably still be mad at Edith, if she'd done that, but I don't know, because I've never seen Edith be remorseful. I do wish Mary had gone after Edith and showed up in London to apologize, instead of focusing on herself, but otherwise, she did what I needed her to do to forgive her. That, combined with me loving her as much as Carson does , made it easier to get past. But I am really disappointed in her.
scm1011, Edith was very gracious. I thought more about that last night. To come to her wedding, in particular, while she's currently Bertie-less, was very big of her.
This whole episode solidified teamedith for me because she forgave Mary and graciously attended her wedding. I can't see Mary doing such a thing.
I've thought about this, too. I'm very torn. Mary is usually good about admitting when she's wrong. I'm just not sure. I do think it wouldn't have happened as quickly as it did for Edith, this is for sure.
I have nothing to add except last night I didn't want to watch Downton b/c DH bitches and moans throughout about how "boring" it is. So I was saving it (and this thread) for tonight. And of course, he switches the TV on right as they're lifting poor Thomas out of the bath. GD you DH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So of course I had to read the snarky recap and I cannot WAIT to watch this whole Mary/Edith tiff in living color. Ugly enough to make sfy question Mary, even for a second? Must be incredible TV.

Random: DH and I had to pause the TV we were laughing so hard when Donk yelled "GOLLY GUMDROPS!". Between that and his amazing puppy reaction I'm starting to find him adorable.
Oh gosh, I'm dead. What a long way she has come with Tom! "I'm afraid Tom's small talk is very small indeed" to now her thinking he has the most common sense of everyone in the family lol.
I have been waiting for sfy 's reaction to this episode since October. I'm glad that you were annoyed with Mary but I had hoped it would have lasted a bit longer before you forgave her. At this point in the season last fall, I was waiting with baited breath for Christmas to come so I could watch the end!
So typically the Christmas special is at Christmas time for them, right? It didn't look like this one was set at xmas.
I think that it usually does occur around Christmas time, but I can't exactly recall if that happens this time.
ETA: I looked online for the plot and it does occur around Christmas.

This episode made me wonder when the word "bitch" came into the vocabulary. Bc clearly Mary is a bitch but I was expecting a more old-timey word for it out of Edith.
I'm afraid to say it, but I forgave Mary almost right away. In my defense though, I also shed a tear for Edith. I'm truly sorry for her and I wish Bertie had been more forgiving. Also, this episode made me like Edith. I never have. I've pitied her and said, poor Edith, but I actually liked her this week. I think she could have taken more ownership in her lifetime bitchiness toward Mary, but she's right. Mary is also a bitch to her, and she was strong and not pathetic and I like her now. And I'm glad she went back to work, she knows she should have told him, and she takes some ownership of that. She has every reason to be angry at Mary, but she's being quite strong and mature. She's really grown. More than Mary, I'll admit. Good show old girl.
Maybe I'm just glad I was wrong about Tom and Mary.

I had to go look this up because I was curious too, and it actually seems like it was a time-appropriate word choice.
According to Wikipedia, "The next resurgence of the word bitch as an insult to women occurred during the 1920s. The term bitch became more popular in common language during this era. Between 1915 and 1930, the use of "bitch" in newspapers and literature more than doubled." Also, "The word "bitch" during the twenties meant "malicious or consciously attempting to harm," "difficult, annoying, or interfering," and "sexually brazen or overly vulgar."
Is there just the Christmas episode left on March 7th? I looked ahead on my DVR and it seems like next Sunday it's just a lot of behind the scenes nonsense.

This is what I was trying to figure out, too. I thought we had two episodes left, is there only one? That would explain why it felt like Barrow's suicide attempt was crammed in where it didn't belong.
It was cruel of Mary, but it was the catalyst for the sisters to in the end bury the hatchet and not in each other's back. Edith's fear left her to see in the end it was what caused Bertie to flee. I've a feeling he will be back. I'd be disappointed if he doesn't since his character in portrayed as being a kind and sensitive man.

No regular episodes left, just the Christmas special in 2 weeks.

Are we not going to mention Spratt?!!
There was so much happening I forgot all about Cassandra Jones! If Denker finds out about this...I don't even want to think about it lol!

So as much as I hate Mary, I did love her Edith impersonation.
Edith's speech at the end about how one day she and Mary will be the only ones who remember Sybil or Carson or Granny or Mama or Papa made me legit tear up. That's some straight up "Old Town" shit.

I still love Mary. What she did was pretty fucking awful but I can't quit her. I was expecting it after all the "just wait" comments, I pretty much figured that was what she did. I don't hate Edith as much as I used to though, she's not anywhere near as whiny and horrible as she used to be. I cried so much in this episode
