RE: the seasonal fruit thing - has KC said anything different than I did? Nowa also said they don't buy out of season fruit generally. It's not that unusual to be unwilling to pay more for less quality. Maybe in Texas the winter fruit selection is better. But it's not in the Northeast. Again, I bought a container of raspberries at Aldi the other day b/c they were $1.29 - so why not. But they were just okay. Not great, certainly not worth the $2.99-4.99 you would normal see them for at this time of of year. So, no I'm not going to buy my kids whatever fruit they decide they want that day. And they aren't bored and they aren't' starving. I have 5 kinds of fresh fruit and several frozen in the house right now.
These prices are making me want to cry. I just spent $4 on a dozen free range, organic eggs that will last like 3 days. And a block of cheddar? Creeping up on $10. We buy almond milk, and a gallon is about $6, and will last a week. That's $20 for next to nothing! I only buy meat on sale, but it still adds up. And produce? At least $50 on just that. I don't think I have ever left the grocery store for less than $100.
A lot of it is regional, then organic vs. conventional, what you are buying/brand and also where you shop. I rarely shop in a traditional grocery store, for a variety of reasons, but the things you mentioned are usually significantly cheaper at costco for me.

I said the same thing too. I buy what's in season and for the most part on sale. Oranges are $.48/lb right now (and local) and strawberries are $5/pint (and from chile).
I think judging someone for buying in season fruit has got to be one of dumbest things I've seen on here.

I think it's on par with judging people for buying fruit out of season. People act like it's a $10 pint of blueberries that tastes like rat poison. It is not.
To be clear, I'm judging no one. If you like the taste of any fruit you should buy it. I'm specifically talking about stuff I've tasted and decided I'm not buying it until it taste better to me. I have no clue what's in season right now and where. The strawberries and grapes at my local store look and taste like ass. I'll buy something else in the meantime.
For the record, the strawberries in our store taste like ass too, but I still buy them because I can smother them with Nutella, which makes them taste 'slightly' better, and it also allows me to say that I'm eating semi-healthy because I'm having fruit.

Funny, I did the same thing with ass-tasting strawberries and homemade frosting yesterday when i realized that eating plain spoonfuls of frosting was probably the worst thing I could possibly be eating at the moment. Strawberries redeemed me.
I spent the whole summer spending a premium for organic grapes so I have no issues shelling out money when it's worth it. I looked at the grapes at whole foods and wouldn't even buy them because they were small and looked bad. I bought strawberries a few weeks ago because my DSs fav is strawberry cake and they were not good at all even feom whole foods. Seasonal fruit is in no way comparable in taste to out of season. Just no.
I call bullshit. First you would never buy out of season fruit but now you did so you know it's horrible. Bullshit.
I never buy it because in the past when I've had to for a recipe it tastes bad. It's obviously a necessary evil sometimes; not really sure how that's bullshit.
Considering multiple posters agreed (who also confirmed they have significantly larger budgets) I'm not buying this isn't a thing. Also considering that out of season fruit actually does go on sale sometimes I easily could buy it within my budget.
