DD and I have lived literally next to a Hermes store for the past 2 years. We stroll by it all the time. Never thought to pop in and ask if they had any Birkin's laying around. They'd probably LOL at us anyway.
And I'm too timid to even go try. But I have seen a few mall goers with them.
Honestly, I don't even love it. The shape is ok, but I wish the leather was stiffer and held its shape.
They come in like 12 different leathers and skins. Epsom leather is very stiff, and light, and indestructible. It's kind of similar to caviar leather.i have a Kelly in Epsom, though, and I am planning on selling it basis I really think Epsom misses the point. You're paying for soft, gorgeous, leather (and the hand stitching). Epsom feels like plastic and the color loses depth. But, it definitely stiff. Box is also sort of stuff, as is Swift.
My Birkin 35 is the best work bag I have ever used. The size is perfect and I love being able to see everything inside when I open it. I actually love it so much I am on the lookout for a horse shoe Birkin- black Chevre and pink lining.
I have never been fortunate enough to buy a Hermes bag in a Hermes boutique. Not even my Lindy or Evelyne, which are both much easier to get than a Birkin or Kelly. Part of the reason is that the boutiques don't have many colors at a particular time, and if I am paying those prices, I want the colors I want, even if that means paying a mark up to buy on the resale market.
As for resale value, a few months ago, I popped into the Hermes store and one of the Hermes SA's saw my rose Tyrien Birkin and whispered to me that she had a buyer who would pay four times what I had paid for it (the SA didn't know how much I had paid, but the offer was four times that much). So, it was definitely a good investment. Also, it convinced me I will never be able to get a good color in store because at least some of the SA are obviously charging to broker deals for them to their good customers.
Please don't quote, but for a limited time, my Hermes collection (excuse the mess behind me):
Birkin in Rose Tyrien Togo:
Kelly in anemone Epsom (this is the one going on the sale block to help fund my next Birkin; it is cute but too small to be practical for the office and I prefer the Evelyne for days I am not working).
Lindy in black swift (I debated for ages whether to get black or ultraviolet; I got black thinking I would put a pink elephant pikabook in the side pocket and have since been unable to find one):
Evelyne in bleu Lin (Christmas present from H, via me, this year - the Evelyne and the Birkin are my two favorites. I love this bag and use it all the time):
Finally, sneak peak inside my bag, and at my beloved bag organizer, which I use in my Birkin, Lindy, and a few other bags:

My bag is two years old and I bought it at Sam's. I'm trying to figure out how to squeeze the extra cash to have a concert date night. There is no way I could own a Birkin

I think Birkins must be easier to buy in Asia or something. I can't leave my house without seeing a few. I've even seen students at my university carrying them as book bags.
I think if I ever buy an Hermes I'd prefer a Kelly or a Constance. I like shoulder straps.

Honestly, the Birkin is super heavy and I don't think I would get another one in Togo, but not having a strap has not even a problem. I bought the Kelly thinking it would be more usable than the Birkin, but the weird sizing means it isn't. Also, the top makes it really awkward to get in and out of quickly. If you want a functional Hermes, I reccoend the Evelyne- clemence leather is sooooo gorgeous and it sort of molds to your body. Also very easy to go hands free, and mine (which is not even the biggest size) is big enough to hold my laptop.
The inside of your Birkin makes my heart sing. So organized!!! Lol
I cannot handle bag chaos. I even have an organizer in the Evelyne. I won't even use the bags without one, partially because I fear for their interiors but mostly because the lack of ofsnizarion drives me wild.

Go back to the SA and make a deal. Tell him you'll sell to the client if/when he gets in a ________ (fill in your own blank). Everyone wins. And you then have an SA who'll pass along info and do holds.

Would you mind sharing where you got the organizer? I need one.

Yeah, there's no bag I want more than that one. It's totally impractical but makes my heart sing. And I suspect the SA doesn't trade bags, just cash.

I don't understand designer bags. Or shoes. I am not kind to either and therefore the money spent on them would be completely wasted because I would destroy them with wear and tear.

Do I have a wig for my crotch? No.
Kidding aside, I had an Hermes saddle when I was younger. It was cheaper than those purses by quite a bit. Of course, this was before SATC was on the air. Who knows how much they cost now.

That was a big if, haha. It isn't in my 5 year plan or anything. I need to work my way up through Fendi and Chanel first.
And regarding buying nice bags in general: I live in a 600 sq ft apartment so I don't have room to store lots of stuff, I don't have a car so that saves a ton of money, my weight fluctuates too much to spend $$$ on clothes. I mean it is only practical that I spend my money on nice purses instead
