The ridiculousness in all this is that residents knew right away that something was wrong when they switched from Detroit to river water back in 2014 because their water started coming out all nasty looking. And yet it took until late 2015 for the switch back to Detroit water. Never mind this whole mess could have been avoided if they (officials) had either A.) taken the discount Detroit offered them and had never made the switch or B.) spent the money to treat the river water like they were supposed to to make it less corrosive. Ridiculous. All of it. Like did people call in saying "Hey my water isn't clear. This isn't drinkable." Water folks: "Extra vitamins! Er... minerals! It's fiiiinne."

The one good thing I can say is that so many communities are coming together to help. Basically every business and school I've come into contact with is either collecting water or money.
However. The complete ire that I feel for our governor and state government in general defies description. Look up what's going on in the Detroit Public School system right now, too, to see how fabulously the leaders they've appointed are further fucking up a previously fucked situation.

$100 per day.
That is all it would have cost.
$100 per day.
Right?! And now they're talking about over a billion to replace the pipes, correct?

Even my dyed in the wool union-hating, GOP loving Dad was all "Yeah, I get the sick-outs" when I showed him those pictures.

People will lose jobs but not the right people. The scapegoats. Most businesses here are collecting water and donations. Also some fire depts. have gone out there with their trucks filled with water.

If you didn't get a chance to watch Rachel Maddow (MSNBC) the other night this gives some good insights in to this fucking mess. She did an amazing job.
bex1973 : Are there any groups giving out effective filters people can affix to faucets, shower heads, pipes? Something so that people can bathe their kids without worrying they might drink some water? That and and free labs testing children's blood for lead levels come to mind.
snipsnsnails , @tambcat and everyone else with kids in the high risk age groups: it's horrifying. I can't imagine what I would do if I found out my kids' water had been poisoned with lead and other toxins for a year.
It's especially upsetting to me to think about the babies who drank powdered formula mixed with tap water for the first year of their lives, like E did. How much lead did their tiny bodies take in?
We are less than an hour from Flint and I think about this every day. I'm horrified for the people that live there.
We spent one day in Flint during the time the water was effected and I keep thinking about it to try and remember if my daughter would have drank any of it. I know, even if she did, she's fine with such a little amount but if this small incident is bothersome to me, what must those parents that live there be going through? It's horrifying.

Sign any petition that Michael Moore has out. He can be obnoxious, but that's the point. He draws attention and embarrassment to the situation. It's painfully shameful and the people of the state, especially--well, many--want Snyder arrested.
Additionally you can contact the Community Foundation of Greater Flint at 810/767-8270. They are fielding a lot of calls and helping to direct donations.
Another little thought of item is baby wipes - because people are limiting showering & bathing in the water these are welcomed
Do you happen to know if nursery water (like the stuff you see at Babies R Us) is needed at all for those with infants/toddlers? Or just plain drinking water in jugs?
Yes distilled water is requested for formula babies. But as Tamb said it doesn't need to be Nursery water. Gallon jugs would just be wonderful to keep waste down and easier for families to refill with safe water.

Yeah, that was the one I could think of so people knew what I was talking about. I want to round up some distilled water and send it, will call the number you posted above about where.

In addition to the already horrible conditions the people off Flint are facing, people who are undocumented are being turned away from certain water distribution sites due to lack of identification.
There is only one place (that I know of, so far) that is distributing water without asking for identification and that's Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
My daughter lives in Genesee County and works in Flint. Her office is part of the affected water system but her employer brings in filtered water for them, so she's lucky in that regard but there are so many that aren't.
I think it's a complete disgrace that a city in this country, which claims to be the best, had been poisoning its citizens and children and it's taken this long to do anything about it.
The repercussions from lead exposure will follow these children for the rest of their lives.
Jesus. Now they're saying that the filters are not strong enough to remove enough of the shit in the water. They are telling all pregnant women and kids under 6 to exclusively use bottled water.

This is out of control
I saw this today and it's infuriating.
I'm coordinating collections for several places and many area churches are doing water drives but it's not enough.
The people who are responsible for this need to be charged with crimes. They have destroyed lives and no, I'm not overreacting. I've seen what lead exposure does to children.
Also there's they whole thing about the Legionnaire's disease that's not really even being discussed. People DIED.

I know. There were some plumbers that were out helping people today so that is heartening at least.
We reached out to the Eastside Mission today, their ok with water right now but in a week will need more

I've been enraged about this. Michael Moore just had a good call to arms essay if you want to read it. Also npr had a good series outlining the criminal activity of Snyder 's Emergency manager law that they snuck in. I've been in arms about that for years but am absolutely horrified that such widespread, damaging repercussions occurred as a result. This is insane and horrifying. I keep picturing how I would react I'd I found out I had been feeding my kids lead.
I can't even articulate how angry this makes me. Btw, no way, no how, did I ever vote for Snyder. My joke for years has been I'd pretty much vote for anyone running against him.

I'm proud of the fact that I never voted for him either! Which is totally weird to say I guess... I've heard rumblings that Kildee may run for governor, him I would proudly vote for!
This situation makes me sick. We use tap water for Stella's formula and I can not imagine finding out that our water was poisoning her. I am going to talk to DH tonight and make a donation.
I wanted to bring this back up because it is so appalling. This picture came across my FB today. It is of a pipe from the pump station, "built back in the 1940s." The brown stuff, according to the water plant supervisor, is "sediment." The background is the replacement pipes that will be installed.
Pictures that came up when I simply searched for Flint Water Pipes on The Google:
This is what the people of Flint are drinking, feeding their babies and children, cooking with and bathing in.. Appalling and criminal.
