I don't have a specific car in mind yet. I'm going to test drive a bunch today and see if I can narrow it down some. I feel like I'm going to go with the Elantra / Corolla / Civic group so I am going to drive all 3 of those today.
I'm not a car person so if I don't favor one over the other then I'll probably just get whatever is cheapest.
Is the credit union the cheapest place to get a used car loan? I purchased my Hyundai used from the dealership and qualified for a used incentive they had at the time so I have never gone through a bank.

My first car was a Corolla and they're one of the most reliable car I've had, and a good car if you commute quite a lot. My close friend loves her Civic and bought them over and over again for years. I'm actually a fan of Sonata too and hello 10 year warranty! Otherwise I don't know much about the Elantra.
I am a Honda fan. We've had a Civic and a CR-V and they are both great. I prefer buying new cars, but my cousin owns a Honda dealership so we get great pricing. We only owned the Civic for about a year (I got a company car so we sold it), and were able to sell it for more than we paid. The financing on new cars has always made it a better option than slightly used because of how Hondas retain value.
I've been looking at the Honda Crosstour as a potential next car. It's basically an Accord (similar in size to the Sonata and Camry), but has a hatchback rear. Might work better for loading/unloading bikes, but would likely handle more like a car.
However, they have only been out for a year or two (I think - not long, if longer than that). So you'd have to look at new or late-model used if you go this route.
Also, it's worth paying for a rental if you want to take your time. Peace of mind is important, and a car is a hefty enough purchase that it would be worthwhile to spend a bit of money now to be able to have peace with your car decision.
The crosstours have been out for about 4 years, but I have NEVER seen one in used car listings. They are pricier than the accords, so I'm not sure I could stomach buying one new, but it might be the only way to get one.
I haven't seen that many on the roads either, so I suspect there just aren't that many produced to begin with. I have no idea why, because this car gives a lot of "best of both worlds" kind of thing as you pointed out.
The crosstours started with 2010 model year. DH's classmate had one at their reunion.
They were discontinued in 2015. :/
I love my Forester. A friend just got the new Rouge and really liked it. He'd had an older Subie prior and wanted a bit more space. He got a better deal at Nissan. The H-RV looks interesting for the price.
