I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a good tour for the Vatican and Colosseum?
Or does anyone know about of a bus tour that does this / both? I'm going to Rome with my mom and she's older and doesn't enjoy walking tons (she is capable). I have prepared her that there will be a lot of walking, so she's prepared, but I'd like to do the easiest thing for her to make her (and my) life easier.
We did an entire guided tour in Italy, so the Vatican and the Colosseum were included. One big perk of going with a group was that we never waiting in line. Some of the lines were an hour or two long! Personally, I'd look online for a tour that has a "skip the line" privileges. I googled, and Viator (which I've used before in Spain), has some options.
We used Walks Inside Rome for our Vatican tour. We did the small group one and there were only 4 other people in our group, and we got to go inside before the general opening so we got to see the Sistine Chapel with very few people in it. Our guide was an art history student so she was very knowledgeable, too. There was quite a bit of walking but there's really no way around that. I wouldn't do that Vatican without booking something that lets you skip the line. Granted we went the Tuesday after Easter so it was extra busy, but the line was blocks long.
For the Colosseum we did the Underground tour. This was in 2014 and at that time you had to call to book that. It was a pain in the ass to book, but worth it for the experience and not having to wait in line. Here's a TripAdvisor thread about it.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. Mark Twain
We also did the underground tour at the Colloseum in 2014, and yes, calling was a pain in the ass, but we also really enjoyed it. We didn't do a tour of the Vatican, but I wish we would have.
