I gained all this weight in the past year. My psychiatrist wants me to get my thyroid checked. I wrote her off until I realized neuropathy is a sign of hypothyroidism. I have KILLER neuropathy in my leg. It's new.

I've been on meds for about 10 years. It definitely helps with symptoms. For me, nothing helps me lose weight. I started on 50mcg and I'm at 175mcg now. I can tell when my levels are off. I'm more tired, my hair falls out, I gain weight, I get more headaches. These go away some when my levels are controlled. I see an endocrinologist. He keeps my levels at a better place than my GP.
ETA: definitely get checked. It's bad to have your levels off. Besides side effects, it's bad for your heart.

It can't hurt to get checked. I should probably see an endocrinologist for a second opinion, but my internist ended up prescribing a low dose for me. My levels are technically in the normal range, but all of my symptoms (e.g. constant exhaustion, memory issues, cold sensitivity, extreme hair loss, etc) seemed to point in that direction.
To be honest, although it seemed to help initially, I'm not completely convinced because I'm back to being tired and forgetful all the time, but at least I'm not as worried about going bald anymore.
Go see your doctor! If nothing else than to put your mind at ease.
Definitely get checked. My mom was hypothyroid (along with my brothers, grandma, and g-grandma) and had debilitating neuropathy's in both feet. Neuropathy's aside, she felt so much better once she was on the appropriate medicine and levels for her meds. It didn't help the neuropathy's though.

mlkgls I would go to an endo. You really should get checked every 6 weeks initially so you can find the right dosage. A GP will often say you're normal at less than 5. My endo keeps me under 2 if possible. The difference in 2 and 5 can be huge for me
Absolutely get checked. I was originally hyperthyroid due to Graves' disease (auto immune) and didn't realize how many symptoms I was actually having. I'm now considered hypothyroid because I had mine removed. Even when in range, I have some symptoms but for the most part, the medicine controls it. I always recommend seeing an endocrinologist when possible for monitoring thyroid issues.

I know, I really should, especially if my levels were on the border or "sub-clinical" to begin with. I had more energy at first and it felt like the fog had lifted finally, but now I'm back to feeling about the same. My memory is like Swiss cheese. My hair stopped falling out though!

I would definitely get checked. Mine would have gone undiagnosed as well if it weren't for infertility, and I had no idea I was truly symptomatic until I was diagnosed. I'm on 75 mcg of synthyroid too, but my last labs had me just under 5, and I feel super off, so I think I need to go up and I'm making an appointment this week.
If it is that, I can't express the world of difference you feel. I had no idea that my "norm" was so off. Worth a test for sure!
Get checked for sure! I'm on a low dose which helps immensely. Never had a negative experience with the meds.
I'll also echo others about seeing an endochronologist. I miss mine from NY. He diagnosed my thyroid and diabetes and had so much more knowledge about caring for both and really empowered me to be in control!
Just chiming in to say I've been on meds for hypothyroid for about 10 years. I was extremely tired, losing hair, etc. My stepmom told me to get my thyroid checked and there it was. I do think it was what caused my initial weight gain, and I haven't stopped gaining since :/ The symptoms were much better, but I definitely didn't have a weight problem until I was diagnosed and started on meds. I have been able to lose weight by strict diet, but it's definitely a struggle.
