I posted some months ago about applying for a senior position and ended up getting the job a few months ago. However, I've been unhappy with my work for quite some time but have tried to stick it out since it is really convenient. I'm currently in higher education, but would prefer to move to the private sector (getting and MBA right now). I just found a job at a local tech company and am considering applying for it. The benefits are far better than anything I can get with the state and it is a flexible work environment. My question is, will the fact that I just took a senior position look poorly when I go to apply for this new job? I have been in my department for almost 5 years, but maybe it is too soon to look into leaving. At this point I need to do something and may just apply to see what happens. Any advice is appreciated!
Absolutely not! They don't have to know anymore about the situation than what you tell them. We promote people to new levels all the time - it doesn't mean they have a totally new role.
I'd apply. Did your job duties change significantly between your old position and your current one? I'd structure your resume so it's clear you were promoted, not job hopping. I would mention during the interview that although I was recently promoted, I have been interested in a move to the private sector for some time.

Ummm, this is pretty much the most amazing resume I've ever seen! Lol! Too bad I can't put it on my LinkedIn profile!
