That is awesome. And honestly, why not walk away at this point? You've got enough money to live well on, and the physical risk of football is so high. Why do further damage to your body and your brain if you've got a cool 50 mil in the bank?
I read that he does talk to other players about how to save and invest. He seems like a good guy from the tiny bit I know of him. And good for him, I hope he escapes the CTE curse.
Good for him. I've seen the statistic that 1 in 6 NFL players files for bankruptcy within either 10 or 12 years of retirement, regardless of salary or how long they played...which is nuts.
That's awesome. He needs to be brought back to give talks to all the newly recruited players on how to not blow all your money and go broke if you have to retire early because of an injury or something.
I know a lot of them blow their money which is hard to wrap my head around. I wonder how much of his $5mil a year from endorsements he actually spends. I mean that's not exactly living frugally if he spent all that (though it sounds like he wouldn't).

Selfishly I'm sad that we will no longer get to see him play, but good for him. And here is a link if anyone wants to see a great interview with him talking about life growing up and going from living in the projects to making millions per year. espn.go.com/video/clip?id=9927540
And just to be an AW - a few years ago at our kids' school auction we won passes to a closed Seahawks practice. We were literally steps away from them, and seeing Marshawn run right at you is definitely an interesting site. We met Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson, but unfortunately didn't get to meet Marshawn. DD has his jersey though, and when he saw her wearing it he leaned over and gave her a wink and a wave. Made her year.

I seriously love our boys. (heart) They do amazing things for the community.

I am so glad to see guys walking away from the game because of the risk of injury. One day, the NFL will have to address it. Unfortunately they have very good lawyers, but it's becoming very clear they know the prevalence of CTE and the extensive damage it causes.

As far as I know, he has no trouble speaking with people. He just hates the media hoopla and I think the way words can get twisted.
But hey, he's just here so he doesn't get fined (tm).
I can see him perhaps being willing to talk with other players about this. On the other hand, I can also see him giving the NFL the finger re: being asked to talk about anything, particularly since the NFL clearly doesn't give a shit about anything but raking in the cash.
Yup, "good for him" is what went through my mind too. For the fact he's making millions in endorsements, he's clearly still living a very nice life. But to look ahead and make a point to not spend that $$ - that really will put him in a spot where he can really choose what he wants to do moving forward.

Right. I also guffawed at the original thought that the NFL would be behind this, but like you, appreciate the sentiment behind it.
Nonetheless, I could see the NFL sponsoring such talks that would gear players to a certain financial advisor group, of which the NFL took a cut of the commission. Which I hope is against the rules... Which is why is hasn't happened yet. Because I'm actually kind of surprised it hasn't, but wonder if we've found a tiny shred of ethical fiber..? Deep thoughts, yo.
I've got issues with Marshawn after the just before last call hit and run his car did along my normal stumbling home from the bar path, but seriously--good for him.
