I am so stuck on this. My daughter's BFF is turning 12. They are both in that age where they like to think of themselves as older, but they still really like the little girl stuff.
My daughter asked her for an idea and she suggested food, lol.
Take her on a shopping spree without mom so she can pick out an outfit she really wants (my goddaughter is 14 and loooooves when I do this - she and her mom always bicker over her clothes)

I agree that some sort of fancy adult food that's relatively inexpensive plus a gift card would be best.
Maybe a small package of macarons? I think those would be seen as fancy and adult.
My niece (just turned 14) wanted gift cards to clothing stores - GAP, Garage (never heard of it), and American Eagle. This has been pretty consistent for the past couple years.

When I turned 12, my mom's friend gave me a box of cheap real makeup (like Wet and Wild type stuff). I still remember that as one of the best presents I ever received.

my daughter is 11.5. Here are some things she loves:
Lokai bracelets (a new purple one just came out) Bath and Body Works products (or GC) Lush products (or GC) Lululemon headbands any kind of lip balms (EOS, lip smackers, etc) makeup (she doesn't where it outside the house)
I like the idea of an experience together too though. If she wants food, maybe they can get dressed up and go to a nice restaurant together (with you)?
I teach middle school and while a lot of it is regional, the girls like branded sweatshirts (Gap, Aero, AE), smartphones/tablets (maybe an iTunes GC) and going to the movies.
