A guy drove up in the mail van saying he just got hired and his phone died which he needs for gps so he held out phone and charger and asked me to charge it. I was feeling really awkward, no one else around so I took the phone, my dog ran up and barked at him. I shut and locked door then he drove off. I'm not sure what to do now...wait ten minutes for him to come back? Call police?? What is going on here. Phone has now wring twice. He also was not wearing a uniform.
This is weird. Do you have anyone that you could call and talk to when he rings the doorbell? I try to be on the phone when I'm in uncomfortable situations (like weird dudes setting up my cable) so that if anything weird happens, someone is aware.
I never think the things people post on here like this are dangerous or weird... and this is WEIRD!
I don't know about dangerous but super weird. I like steph96 suggestion but I'd also get the mail van's licence plate and report him to USPS once he's gone.
“With sorrow—for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection—we dissent,”
This is so weird. My mail people don't wear uniforms anymore but why the hell would a mail carrier have a plug in charger and no car charger. Do you have an external mailbox? I'd probably answer the phone and tell him I was leaving it in the mailbox and you accepted it because you were stunned but not to do that again. If there is no mailbox, I'd leave it in a bag out front. I would not answer the door and hand him the phone, though. I do know that. Do you live alone? I wonder if he was testing whether you were home. This is just so weird to me and I would be creeped out, which is rare.
If he needs the phone charged for GPS because he doesn't know the route or whatever, then how could he have gone far without it? And I'm pretty sure uniforms are mandatory.
This is definitely weird. If he doesn't return soon I'd consider a call your local post office and/or the police.
I was standing outside bringing up the recycling bin so he drove up in the mail van (but my mail had already been delivered). When he was handing me the phone and charger my dog ran out (we have a glass door and real door and I had only shut glass since I was only planning to be outside for a minute) my dog barked and such so I took the phone and charger since I didn't want to invite him in and I said my dog wouldn't like it. That's when he drove off...still no sign of his return but my husband did drive home and said he will hand off the phone if he comes back. He thinks we should call the post office soon if he doesn't return.
And why would the mail carrier need GPS? They keep the same route! This is so weird. OP, are you still there??
He said he's a brand new hire which makes sense to me.
Meh, I'm wouldn't be awfully alarmed especially since he is trusting you with the phone. Even if it's stolen, what reason would he have to drop and leave? Sure, I could come up with scary situations but this wouldn't scare me.
I wouldn't let him in and would probably walk from around back to give it back to him so he can't force himself in but other than that, it could be legit and you're helping a new hire. They are hiring like crazy right now. I am a city girl and trust no one but this wouldn't make me want to call his company to report him. If you are in an area that has restaurants or waiting areas that he could have gone to instead then I'd be suspect and call the police but if it's rural then, I wouldn't think twice about it. Especially since they are tracked if he's in a company vehicle and I do know for a fact that they do have to use their personal phones for GPS and calls as they are not given company phones...which stinks for them.
Also, those trucks are pretty basic and do not have cigarette lighters or USB plugs to hook up a phone to charge so they're kind of stuck. Hopefully, he'll pick up a back up charger once he can afford it - they don't make much as drivers.
We called the post office and they were planning to send a manager over to pick up the phone. Within two minutes of my calling original guy came to get the phone...so hopefully he doesn't get fired, but I had his phone almost two hours with no indication when he would be back. Glad it ended up okay on my end, but he really must buy a charger!

Rural route carriers in my area don't wear uniforms.

Not necessarily, carriers on a rural route* don't actually have to wear uniforms. They should have a hat or some type of identifying gear, but it doesn't always happen with new/part-time carriers.
* A lot of suburban routes were once rural, but have never been reclassified.

He probably did a few deliveries. I really hope that he wasn't fired.
