So, after the advice earlier this week on order of doing projects (paint, tear up carpet, electric, carpet install...Thank you again!), I called for estimates. Carpet is selected, waiting for an estimate. Painting our entryway is going to be a lot more than anticipated! Two painters I called wouldn't even come for an estimate. The one here today said they could do it, but he wasn't sure how yet. It's 2 stories, and the trouble spot is that there is a giant ledge (3' deep) above the door with a large window above it. So scaffolding won't get them close enough to trim, but a ladder may not get them high enough because of the angles. I have another guy coming tomorrow, so maybe he will have better ideas.
Anyway, we originally wanted to paint the area blue, but since it's going to be so expensive, we want to paint the area more neutral now. I'm bummed, but at that price, I can't afford to change it in 3 years.
Do you think I can paint the lower portion some Greige color (Anew Gray, Mindful Gray, Light French Gray, or Argos, maybe?) and the upper part a blue-gray color (smoky azurite, Charcoal blue, or faded flax flower)?
ETA: Don't be fooled by the pic...The color reads very 1998 Mauve in person...at least to me!
ETA2: We got a second quote today. Local painter who painted my real estate agent's house. His estimate is a little over half of what the other company said! He can start next week...now to decide colors! Would it look weird to do a deep blue only in the darker brown section?

Well crap. I can't figure out how to post a pic on my phone. Anyway, it's a greige color, more warm than others I tried. A lot of the grays I tried read purple next to the wood (very similar to yours). Definitely try some samples. I ended up with something much different than I started with. LOL
lilac05 am I remembering correctly, you are in Dencer Metro? If you are, I have a painter Rec of a guy who did our vaulted 2-story family room and vaulted ceilings elsewhere. PM me if I'm remembering right.

Unfortunately, I'm not.
I'm hoping that the guy tomorrow will have a better plan (& better prices!). He did my real estate agent's house, and I know she's pretty picky, but frugal.

I think you could do two complementary colors. We have Pashmina (a griege) leading into a hallway that's Blue Mist (the same as Restoration Hardware's famous Silver Sage). They go well together. Sorry, the picture's not the greatest but you get the idea:
Re your ETA2, I think two tones of blue would be awesome. Of course half my house is a shade of blue, so I may be biased. Tho, if you want to make the upper area really pop, you may want to do more neutral on the rest.
MittenState, that's what I'm thinking, too. And I'm not going to be able to watch when he's working on the part above the ledge over the door. (Though I do need to be here if he falls & breaks his neck, I suppose!). I feel like I should have a big mat below him!
I think I've decided on a neutral color (getting samples tomorrow) on all of the lighter areas & a really dark blue (charcoal blue from SW) in the darker area. Our carpeting that we're putting in is lighter than what we currently have, too. Personally, I'd love to have all sorts of blue in the house like a previous house, but I'm afraid that we'll have to move unexpectedly again, and that would be a nightmare to sell...nor do I want to pay to have it painted again!
Then we will have an accent wall to the left of the entry, in the living and dining rooms, that will be in the same color family as the charcoal, but lighter.
I have such a love/hate relationship with picking out colors. I feel like I know exactly what I want in my head, but I don't trust myself!

Just put a trampoline down there so if he falls he can get back up there easier
