H and I are considering a long weekend trip at the end of May. I currently have the hotel reserved just in case, since there was limited space, with the ability to cancel the reservation up to 72 hours prior to the trip. Tickets for the music festival are being held for me until mid-March so I can decide if we want to go. Airfare for both of us will be the most expensive part, but prices are actually pretty good right now. I'm thinking I'd want to book airfare sooner rather than later if prices are going to go up, but want to leave myself an out if I really just don't feel comfortable leaving D yet. If anything, we'd lose the cost of the festival tickets because they are non-refundable.
Does travel insurance cover this? If I wanted to cancel a flight at the last minute? Where do I buy this kind of thing?
My Chase Visa card includes travel insurance, but is limited to: "A trip that must be canceled before departure for a covered reason, which is limited to accidental injury, death, or sickness experienced by the card holder or immediate family or traveling companions; severe weather; and for a few other reasons such as unavoidable jury duty."

I have only every bought/used travel insurance to cover those limited items. I think that is what the insurance is intended to be used for. I think I could get my pedi to write me a note if I ended up not being able to go (say due to trouble breastfeeding or illness whatever) if I just couldn't leave the baby
I view travel insurance coverages in 2 main areas: 1. trip protection: if you book far in advance or there are reasons that may cause you to cancel your trip you want to protect your investment in the trip. You need to include the purchase details of your main trip (cruise, hotel, etc) dates and costs. Travel insurance needs to be bought at time of trip purchase. Travel insurance offers a grace period of like 14 days after final deposit of the trip.
2. medical/evacuation/theft protection: these are issues that may arise during the trip where you need coverages and more importantly assistance. In this case, the details of your trip (purchase dates, trip cost, etc) are not needed. You can purchase travel insurance for medical/evacuation any time.
We purchase travel insurance with CSA because its A+ rating with the BBB. And if you want just the medical coverages, in their website www.csatravelprotection.com , input 0 for trip cost.
