I have done a lot of research about buying a brand new car and thought that I understood pricing in terms of MRSP, invoice price, dealer incentives, holdback, etc.
I am looking at a few cars. The 2016 Corolla invoice price is $18,839. The TrueCar estimate for my zip code is $15,389. I know there's a $1,000 incentive but how is it this much cheaper? I feel like I'm missing something.
Employee/friends and family discount? I don't know if Toyota does this, but they probably do. I remember when we bought new a few years ago, the true car value was around what we ended up paying with a friends/supplier discount (we don't have a Toyota car though)
USAA I think uses TrueCar. If you have a TrueCar estimate and bring it to the dealer for the EXACT car, they will honor the price.
This is pretty correct. I sat in with my mom for her car purchase. She used USAA and the TrueCar price. At one point we took all the features for the car that was on the lot and made sure they were each checked on TrueCar. The price that came up was what they sold it to her for. We did that while at the dealership.
I would call and chat with USAA about it. They are always so receptive.
And totally correct with the exact model. We had to make sure to check the first aid kit even.

OOkay, thanks for the info!
I will give USAA a call today if I can (I'm working- lame).
Do you know what I should expect in terms of additional fees on top of the TrueCar price other than the tax, title and tags?

There shouldn't be any other fees. I purchased a car through true car, and the dealer couldn't even charge the dealer add-ons they had on the car like sear protectant with warranty. Evidently, they had applied a scotch guard and would clean my seat for a year or something like that. Because I didn't pay the $300 for it, they just didn't give me the warranty but the scotch guard was already on it.
Also, usaa offers 0.5% air reduction if you go through true car and finance through them.
When I bought my car I used the truecar/Costco price as a ceiling for what I wanted to pay. I then emailed all the dealerships around me and got pinned them against one another. A few wouldn't negotiate with me unless I went in the dealership, but I just moved on to other dealerships.
I think on top of the tax, tag, title there may be "destination fees" or something. You can usually negotiate those.
The dealership I bought my last car from didn't have the exact model from TrueCar, but they honored the TrueCar pricing for the SUV I bought. I added on some other things like a hitch and factory installed rubber mats, so my total was about a few hundred higher than the TrueCar price.

in Ca you would pay an $80 doc fee and $1.75 per new tire. If the dealership electronically files DMV it's an additional $29.
Even if you go in with "no haggle" prices, you should definitely haggle anyway. We brought in printouts of the no haggle prices (from True Car, Edmund's, and Amex) and got the price down farther from there.

We emailed the largest dealership in the state and gave them the Costco pricing. They beat it by 1k, drove the car to us, and DH signed the paperwork in the kitchen. It was so easy. We never went to the dealership.

They will probably sell you the interior and exterior protection stuff. We spent ages going back and forth on that. It was the longest Friday night ever being her company for that purchase. They had stock problems on the original model she wanted. So we didn't have the TrueCar price printed out for the car she began haggling on. Which added to our time. So print out a couple of them for different cars you looked at. So you are ready.
