I usually never add a tip if I get take out good from a restaurant and pick it up myself. But there is a place I've ordered from a couple times recently that confuses me. When you call, it's not the host/reception that takes the order. They get one of the servers to take the call. Then when you go to pick up, the host again tracks down the right waiter and he goes to the kitchen to get the food and print your receipt. So it feels a little more personal? So now I need to tip? Or should I always be tipping for takeout anyway?
In that situation, I would tip. Your bill is going on that server's total for the night, so he/she will probably be tipping out others working (bar, runners, hostesses, kitchen). So no tip means that server had to pay to give you your meal. Not all restaurants do it that way, but it sounds like that's the case this time.
I'm inconsistent at other takeout places. I try to see what their system is and go from there.

I wouldn't tip. When I worked in a restaurant it was very rare than anyone tipped for takeout.
However, this situation is different. Its odd that the host would take time to track down a server to get your order and payment taking them away from their tables instead of just taking care of the takeouts themselves. I wonder why this restaurant has set it up this way.

I think I probably wouldn't continue getting takeout from a place that expected me to tip for it. Hell, I resent throwing a buck in a jar for a donut and cup of tea; there's no way I'm tipping 20% on takeout. But I'd feel bad not tipping (or tipping less, if the wait staff is counting on it), so I just wouldn't go there anymore once I realized what was going on.
I always tip on takeout. I used to work in various positions in the food industry and was always pretty poor so even though you don't "have to" I do it anyway

I guess I'm pretty surprised that people tip on takeout. I tip on delivery (not 20%, either) and I rarely do takeout anymore since I discovered, far too late in life, that people will bring you food while you answer the door in your pajamas, but I can't imagine tipping a full 20% on, for example, $60 worth of Thai takeout. A $60 delivery will garner probably a $10 tip, which I give the driver in cash. Am I wrong?
I always tip on take-out. Someone had to take the time to get my food together, add the sauce, napkins, chopsticks, etc, which took time from their tables/hosting duties. Usually only a couple of dollars, but something.
Yes. I tip modestly. When I was a server, we had to take turns ringing in takeout orders so I was taxed on those sales.
Why is an employee taxed on sales? Another retinue restaurant practice?
In America, servers make the bulk of their wages in tips so they are taxed on their modest or tiny hourly wage plus a percentage of their sales. That's why people who don't tip suck. They are costing servers money, not just not paying them.
eta: People who don't tip in general suck, not people who don't tip on takeout. It seemed 50/50 on takeout. I always hoped for a few bucks but was lucky that takeout was a very small percentage of my sales as a server.

You have to report all sales you ring in.
Your paycheck when you're a server is next to nothing. First, because you're making around $2 an hour, but also because you have to report your sales and it's assumed you're making at least 8% (may have changed since I was a server) on those sales.

It's out of control.
Most restaurants I worked at, take out orders were done by the host, who did not (normally) work for tips. I realize this isn't all restaurants though.
This is why waiting tables in Cali was awesome...so many people are over tippers, and I made $9 an hour (this was 15 years ago though). I'd take home $400 in tips on a Friday night, plus I'd get my hourly wage.
I don't know but the last time I had pizza delivered I paid a tip when I checked out on the website. (it gave me the option of clicking 10% 15% 20%) The guy came and delivered my pizza I went to sign and it was set up like so :
Pizza : 18.94 Tip 3.09 (or whatever - I'm too lazy to do the actual calculations) Additional tip : ________ Total : _________
So I'm trying to do the fucking math in my driveway while the poor dude is standing there. I was pissed, because usually the place doesn't offer tipping on the receipt so I always tip before hand and feel like if I don't tip good enough the dude will piss in my food or something, but not only did I tip a good amount, they wanted me to give more fucking money?
I could see if it was Bill : 22.13 Tip : ____ Total : ___
but the shit actually said additional tip.
Seriously this was like 3 months ago and I'm still pissed about it, it's better than when the pizza came and the box, and bag that the soda was in smelled like stale nasty ass cigarette (that was a different place) I couldn't even eat the pizza because I wanted to vomit.
But to answer the question yes I usually tip because I'm a push over and I feel like since the line is there I have to do it.

I always tip on takeout. One of the waitstaff usually needs to take time away from running around to their tables to pack my stuff. They double check to be sure everything is there and add utensils, paper goods and any condiments. I think that is worth a few dollars.
I always tip on takeout. Not 20% but something. Shoot, I'll even add a little tip when we get frozen yogurt sometimes lol. I worked retail for years and people can be so rude, I can only imagine how much worse it is working as a waiter/waitress.
