Guys, I'm really frustrated. L is having major issues with PT and I don't know what to do. He has been day trained since before he was 2.5. He wears a pull up to bed for naps and nighttime, and STILL pees in it. Plus, every once in awhile he poops in his pull up when he wakes up in the morning instead of getting up and going to the bathroom. It blows my mind that he's still doing this. We had a bit of a regression when Lu came around...like, the pooping in his pull up was a little more frequent. When he does it, we don't shame him or get really angry, but we are firm that pee and poo goes in the potty and please next time lets try and get up and go to the bathroom. I understand that it's normal for a kid his age to not be night trained...but after this long? Over a year and a half? What do I do? Tonight we decided to try and let him sleep in underwear over night. We had a discussion about being allowed to get out of bed and go potty, and let's not have an accident in our underwear. He literally peed himself 5 minutes after he went to bed, despite having gone pee right before bed. Was it for attention? I just don't understand and I'm so frustrated
I don't know about pooping when he wakes, but peeing when asleep (night or nap) is very very normal. It doesn't have anything to do with how long they have been day trained. It's developmental. Peeing at night isn't considered bed wetting until after age 6. So there is really nothing to do for that except be patient.
For the pooping - do you know if he is awake? Is he normal comfortable with leaving his room on his own to go to the bathroom?
I think it's 100% normal that he still pees in his sleep. Some kids don't stop that until closer to 5 or even later. I wouldn't worry about that at all
As for popping when he wakes up- I would just keep reminding him to get up and go when he needs to poop. I would start a sticker chart for poops
Agree that it is common and normal for 3 year olds not to be night trained. We had a similar issue with DS2 who was day trained for a year A YEAR!! and still peeing in his pull-up first thing in the morning. That was just laziness and we went cold turkey on him and he didn't like peeing in the bed so he started getting up.
However, we didn't have a new baby in the house and I'm sure that changes things a lot. I'm sorry C, he's probably still a bit unsettled by the new family member (also normal!) and it's totally up to your comfort level how firm you want to be with him. If you KNOW he can last the night, then it's worth persisting with the underwear overnight. What helped us was taking DS2 before we went to bed, around 10pm. We did that for months.

Does positive reinforcement work? We had great success with a sticker chart for pting. At the end of each row he would get a small prize. After the entire chart was filled he got something big.

Sometimes for naps, I will put him in underwear, and he will wake up dry...so I honestly can't tell if he's peeing while sleeping or if it's when he wakes up.
As far as pooping...what I think happens is- he has his OK to wake clock which is set for 6:45. He usually wakes up around 6-6:15 and lays there...usually he will complain that it's taking too long for his clock to go on. We've told him that he is allowed to get up and go potty if he needs to, but he has to stay in bed otherwise until 6:45. I think between 6 and 6:45 is when he poops :/

Maybe try that for pooping?
It did when we were PT when he first started...but now he expects it for every time he goes potty, or when he wakes up dry from a nap...which I mean I guess I can do?

Hm. With Ari it was easy to abandon. Once the chart was filled, no more toys! And he just went with that.
I'd get him up early to poop, like right when he wakes and see if that helps. Send your Dh in there to deal with it.
Lincoln took over a year to be completely night trained, it's usually the most difficult part. He still has occasional accidents if he's sleeping really deep.
I would take him as soon as he wakes up in the morning and see if that helps with the pooping.
Yeah may has been pee trained for over a year but still wets heavily at night which is totally normal. I would change the ok to get up clock to 6 am and get him up and poop.
Olivia day trained at 2 and just night trained about a month or two ago. I think half the time she was peeing in her pull up when she was awake in bed (like 15 minutes after going to bed while she was awake) and that was maddening. She was also still peeing a lot in her sleep. One day she just woke up dry; she was ready. I wouldn't worry about the overnight stuff but I get how it's frustrating when they are awake and going. I would try to take him to the potty when he wakes up and the have him go back to bed to wait for his clock. Maybe that will break his habit of pooping in his pull-up.
