I use Mabel's labels because they're easy. I bought a big pack.
I label shoes, outside clothing, sippy cups and her blanket. I didn't label her extra clothes because they're kept in her cubby and I only take basic things to daycare anyway. Oh and her soother because that seemed easy to lose.
I'm not gonna lie - I "labeled" his sheets, blanket, and the cloth diapers he uses for comfort with my embroidery machine. I picked a theme and am using a combination of his name/monogram. *LOSER*!!

Many families at my preschool use Name Bubbles and they work well. I've seen them used on all types of clothes and lunch dishes. I wouldn't worry about the extra clothes so much but definitely ALWAYS label any outdoor clothing and bottles/cups.

www.etsy.com/shop/MeYDecals. We use these. They are cheap and we haven't had problems with them not sticking. We have to label any clothing or shoes that stay there.
I have 38 preschoolers total (AM & PM classes). There is no way I can remember whose stuff is whose. Then parents get pissed when their kid comes home without their hat or whatever. Sorry not sorry.

I understand your kid isn't preschool age yet. Labeling clothes is a good habit to get into though.
